MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Type9 gearbox mounting

Does any one have any images or opinions of the Frontline type 9 mounting, I'm wondering whether to reuse my existing (Tony Bolton conversion) mount or change (new shell), the current one is a big 8mm plate, pretty heavy and probably over engineered as I'm going to strengthen the shell in the tunnel area.
Paul MkIMkIV

A pic of mine, removed when I made a similar one out of ally.

John Payne

Thanks John, very useful, much less of a monster than the current one that I have, will make myself one in alloy based on your photo
Paul (MkI

Paul,

I've got one of these in a box of bits in my garage at the minute, I was also thinking of making an alloy version of it as it is incredibly heavy!

Drop me an email and I can send you some pics with dimensions on them

regards,
John

The 4 slotted holes in the middle are I think so it is universal for the 1500 and 1275. I made my ally one a bit smaller and cut it back where the spare holes were. Its a bit harder to make it out of ally if like me you have neither the skill nor equipment to weld it. I riveted the strengthener angle onto mine. I think it saved 1.5kgs (sad that I remember it!) over the steel one. I saw it as a similar saving in weight as an ally engine backplate but it was free!!

I made an ali one as the original is quite heavy.
Brad (Sprite IV 1380)

As i and im sure many others dont have the facilities to make these out of Ali, would anyone be interested in making a batch of them?
Rob McGeown

I'll mention it to Shaun, whose meeting another machine shop this week re-the brake spacer mods & possibly my latest Mumford design.
Brad (Sprite IV 1380)

Good idea Rob, I'd put my name down for an ally one if somebody was to make a batch.
Ed Brown

would mine need to be any different as im using a K?
Rob McGeown

Heres a sketch of mine,

John

Would it be possible to get it photocopied or scanned so I can get accurate dimensions of the holes?

What thickness would it need to be if made out of ally? 1/8"?

the strengthening piece is what height and thickness?

Cheers

Shaun
Shaun

I think the mounting for the K and A are the same, I assumed they were? I would need one for a K too.
Ed Brown

Shaun,
i made mine from 12mm ali with no strengthener rib, but don't let that stop you making one out of 1/8" for you clone :-)

cheers

Brad, get it right it will be a Klone not clone....

Shaun

Shaun,
I'll buy you a head gasket for chistmas for your AH repliKa,

Brad
Brad (Sprite IV 1380)

sorry for delay in replying on here, the plate is 6mm thick, which is why I guess its so heavy!

meant to add another pic!

What does this piece of ironmongery do? My A-series and Ford based 5 speed Spridget doesn't have anything like this at all?
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

Daniel,

apparently its what frontline say is used to mount the gearbox? I bought it in a box of bits for a k-series conversion, but don't think I'll use it.

On my last 5 speed conversion on my 1275 car, I made my own based on Guy and Bill's design,

" I made my own based on Guy and Bill's design,"

but far tidier

I can "see" using that Fiesta? rubber mount is good but otherwise...
Bill sdgpm

Bill, when do you want to pick up some wheels? I've also got 3 k-series mgf engines here at the minute if you are tempted.......

John Collins

the famous phrase "get thee behind me..." springs to mind

Wheels? When are you in?

Now where's Dave O when you need him?

I'm on track next weekend John (after Easter)

no time to "do" a K

I need to talk to you by phone or phizzog to phizzog too very soon, I know a man with lots of midgetery that may need clearing cheap

[leave 'em wondering...]

is the one in the pic the one you are using?
Bill sdgpm

Bill, yes the one i'm using is in the pic, I dropped the subframe and all gubbins in one go from a good running MGF. I've also got full loom and all ecu's from it too. so ready for install nearly,

as for wheels, its easter hols, so 2 wks off and Pom is busy so plenty of time in the garage for me!

Give me a ring sooner rather than later as the MGF's seem to be coming in quick, am always interested in midget stuff though

PS Bill,

seen my new wheels? I was having trouble with wheel nuts for gavins donation,

so bought these.
