MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Type 9 to 1275 7.5' clutch

Forgive me if this has been asked and answered many times before, but I've trawled the archive and struggled.
I'm going shopping on Monday to the Morris Minor centre in Birmingham. I intend buying a type 9 fitting kit to suit my 68 1275.
I'm not very good at keeping up the momentum on projects. I'm also a fitter rather than a development engineer, so I'm trying to get as many parts as possible ready done or already trialled.
I think the planned output of the adjoining motor would benefit from a 7.5" clutch, so...
Which plate and cover do I need instead of the kit supplied 6.5" items?
Where can anybody recommend to have my flywheel machined to suit?
Will the kit release mechanism work with the larger clutch or is there a readily available kit for a concentric setup?

Ta, Mark
M Crossley

You need the Peter May 7.5'' rally clutch, and he can m/c the flywheel to suit.I had mixed results with MMC - very good on Minors I'm sure but I would not use them for anything performance related. The release mech will work with this setup I found.

I bought a ford 7,5"/190mm plate clutch and machined my flywheel to suit that, also have a hydraulic concentric clutch release kit fitted. Have not tried this in the car yet though but everything mated up nicely.
Alexander Sorby Wigstrom

Just got a Peter May steel flywheel and it is a fantastic piece of machining!
When I added the cost of having my old cast iron flywheel lightend, milled for 7.5"clutch, new ring gear fitted and send back and fwd I figured I'd just as well go full monty and not have a possible bomb spinning at 7000rpm next to my ankles....

There are books with this stuff in... 'The MG midget A-H Sprite High Performance Manual'.

Yes - Peter May for the flywheel and clutch and have him balance them.

Use a Burton co-ax concentric clutch kit - saves weight and is a dream to bleed.

Lastly, the MMC 'invented' this conversion and the owner's car (Mike Lennon) was the very first Midget (or Sprite) to be converted. Before that this conversion was only used in Minors. It's also the case that the MMC have a great deal of experience of their kit.
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

Ha! Daniel, I walked into that one! Just dug out my well thumbed 3rd edition "Updated and Enlarged". It replaced my well worn 2nd edition.

I can find the cover, CP3764-4, for £170!
I'm struggling to find stock of the AP friction plate, CP2257-9.
Can anybody recommend an alternative brand. There are a few 190mm x 25.4mm x 23 spline on ebay, but they are NOS or unbranded.

I've picked up my bellhousing and propshaft from the Morris Minor Centre and I've found a copy of a Burton co-axial release mechanism which I'll try.
So I've finally stopped dreaming and I'm gettin stuck in.

Mark,I have a spare cover and plate-used but good-if you're stuck, email me if it is of use.

Mark
Peter May is also having trouble sourcing the cover and even my local car shop has trouble locating one.
Seems like AP have some supply problems or they have run out of the current batch and not yet made an other.
Onno K

Yeah Burton Power (where I bought mine) are also out of stock- of flat finger type cover plate but they do have curly finger 1's. (no stock of friction plate either)

But they do have QH covers & friction plates....
So depending on the power of your engine thay might be suitable and they are a lot cheaper than the AP Racing stuff....

Just a thought....
M Slater

Thanks for the help everyone. I've plumped for a flywheel and cover from MED at slightly less cost than the Peter May stuff.
Having spoken again to the Burton Power people, they've just received a delivery from AP and so I've ordered a friction plate from them.
I almost bought a K-series, ruled out a BMW-K and nearly bought a VmaxScart supercharger, I've finally decided turbo. I've tracked down the MG Metro parts. I'm hoping for 130hp with low comp pistons, MegaJolt and an intercooler. We shall see.
My ebay concentric kit just arrived. I'm a happy bunny, for today at least!

If you haven't already go on the turbominis site for a world of info on turbo A series.
steve cowling

Ha! Get thee behind me Steve. I've been and risked one eye.

Just trying to work out the neatest way to fit the intercooler.
Is it you Steve that has put one right across the grill aperture? I think that Bob, Turbo has tucked one to the left of the radiator.
Getting air out of the engine bay seems to be a challenge as well. I think a GRP replacement bonnet is on the cards. Then vents etc can be added without guilt.

I'll build the engine first.
M Crossley

Hi Mark, yes that was me.I've changed it to a different shape one now.Put vents in the wings if you can,but if you go the f/g bonnet route put a big vent directly above the turbo, otherwise the heat soak gets it very hot!
