MG Midget and Sprite Technical - This is why you should flush your coolant...

I have replaced all my hoses as a matter of course during my rebuild. However I kept all the old hoses connected to the various components for reference of where to fit the new ones.

The old hose pictured was blocked both ends and this is the pile of crud that came out of this one tiny hose (note, the vice did not come out of the hose! :-D). I thought it was a good illustration of why you should listen to Nigel and flush your coolant system every once in a while!

Cheers,
Malcolm

Obviously ... thats part of your engine, but which I couldnt say.

Im thinking blown head gaskets are actually a good thing

Good luck malc

If you have a recording of Nigel repeating
"I TOLD YOU SO" Over and over for hours I'm
up for a one day session and then that's it!

Then everybody better back off and stay outta my way I cant be responsible for what might happen! :-)

er, for an engine or coolant/heating system you don't know the full history of I'd also recommend first using a system cleaner like Bars Flush Cooling System Cleaner

of course it does help to have your whole system joined together :)

on this you'll probably want to use a piece of thick wire to clear out the crud that collects at the engine block drain hole whilst flushing out, and probably at the heater tap/valve hole too

and flush/back-flush/flush again until the water runs out thoroughly clean at each flush

you'll want to do this on the matrix, engine and rad separately and if you have the matrix and rad out you could also shake them when they have clean water in them

Malcolm unless the standard hoses have got better since I last bough a set you'll have to watch them for crazing (9 months on my standard top hose) and possibly cracking or splitting that's why I recommend and use silicone hoses - http://www.classicsiliconehoses.com/

I'm guessing if you cleaned, drained and flushed out your coolant/heating system after a few months use you'd still be able to scrape out crud from the engine drain hole as Dave found out and possibly from the rad too

Steven,
as Guy will point out my ideas are not original so I'm just repeating what others have put before me, I'm not saying "I told you so" but I certainly would if it was you posting this :)

you reported you had to replaced three fuel pumps with points, you're not exactly over quick at catching on sometimes are you ;)

I worry about the price of bullets dropping well below 38 cents each :D

I told you I couldn't be responsible for my actions and now Nigel himself has pushed me over the edge!

I'm going to buy a parrot and train it to recite every line of the MG handbook! I'm going to call it Nigel.

It will prattle off all the answers to any MG question but it really wont know how to do anything! Hmmm that description reminds me of someone but I cant think who.....

Damn, Ill have to get two, its probably married and want to remind me all the time that it is!

Maybe I can teach it to rebuild fuel pumps!

Ha ha ha! :-)

Steven ???

Are you enjoying Illegal moonshine, or homemade beer this evening

Prop

Prop!
You finally caught me! Its Guinness.....the beer Nigel hates! I'm of course talking about my parrot!

LOL!
Steven Devine

I had 6 wine coolers tonight, ...nothing ... just made me pee like a horse all night long, 1st drink in 5 months

I guess I should have gone with pimms cups instead

Less alch ... more umbrellas

You should have grabbed a six pack of Nigelsons!, its the beer that makes you type before you think!

Waterless coolant!!

(Ok, I'll shut up now ;-))

We always listen to Nigel. We don't always take any notice, but we always listen. He gives us no choice! But a lot of what he says makes a lot of sense. It's just that we need a Pedantry filter on here, and not just for Nigel...........What? Who, me?

Bernie.

A properly cleaned cooling system is a 'cool' cooling system. Mine became so cool I needed a hotter thermostat to get some heat out of it :-)

Well worth the effort in the long run.

Heater and radiator matrix's out for a proper flush is the only way to go.

as I put more than once before - everyone is entitled to Nigel's opinion

to regular views there are lots of pendentry repeat posts from me but also bear in mind some posters are new and seeing these repeated posts for the first time and there are many, possibly regular and also passing viewers to the forums that never post, some of them will also being seeing the repeated posts for the first time

the fact that despite of the Archives many questions and queries are posted repeatedly by new and existing posters when the subject has been covered many times means many posts content gets repeated often and not always by just me

Steven,
wow, you had a humour fade with my last post, usually you'd see that the comments were jokes but perhaps you've had too many Guinnesses or spending too much time with your bigoted mate, perhaps you could share the cost of a bullet between you to make it's use better value for money
Nigel Atkins

for anyone thinking of 'investing' in the Waterless Coolant stuff, I learnt recently that John Deere make a perfectly acceptable equivalent, at around half the price. It's designed for use in combine harvesters, so a heavier duty cycle than our MGs.

Nigee, Nigee

Take a chill pill...its just harmless joshing! I'm sure it would be easy to draw mundane conclusions from my postings about me also!

Stevensons brew for those who are boring and write to much! Ha Ha!

Yes my replies can be cheeky but are light hearted in intent. Hell you could list most of what I write as useless prattle! Ha ha! :-)

The only person I see mentioning firearms or their sundries is you....Why I'm not sure.

everyone is entitled to Nigel's opinion

Therefore may have an opinion to express about that opinion in an open forum such as this!

Yes I know...and its nice to see you take the high road and welcome some one new to the bbs and not screeching at a new poster for not searching the archives but actually taking the time to help someone settle in and feel welcome.

Heading for a lighten up Francis with this next one...

I like to call more than one Guinness's "Guinnii..."

I didn't have a humor fade with your last post...I just accepted you for yourself. I do sometimes wonder where you draw these fantastic fantasy conclusions!

In real life my friend is not bigoted at all and likes to champion fair play and is very generous with his time and resources to all who I've seen arrive at his home and business. I think you may have pushed the envelope with my friend, but that for you guys to work out.....I'm not involved IMHO!

Sharing bullets is really not my style....I think you would probably find me under the hood of another misfortunate MG that was needing some TLC so it can continue widening its carbon footprint!

Half off on waterless coolant.....Ill have to give that stuff a try! I have no experience with it!
Anything that would prevent decay would be a help but I've been knee deep with older engines that have rotted from the inside out and were still able to function.

Cheers! :-) Stay on the sunny side!
