MG Midget and Sprite Technical - The case of the noisy diff

Hello,

I have a mischievous 1275cc 1971 midget, could anyone offer a suggestion as to why my diff would start making a mysterious whirring noise when I reach 3500 revs (I have a five speed conversion if it helps). I've checked and filled the diff oil and it's still doing it. There was a hair-line fracture in the axle which was leaking oil which has since been fixed with chemical metal but I'm pretty certain I found the leak pretty early. Is there something obvious I've missed? By the way it is a a diff from a 1500, is this a common problem?

Yours worringly,

Jonny

Jonny. Has the diff just started making this noise? It is not unusual for a diff to emit a little noise, but as bearings wear or the meshing wears (which takes 0000's miles), they should give good service. The fact it is a 3.7:1 from a 1500 says to me, take it out and check it as they are not easy to find and when you do, they are not cheap!

The gears always make a whining noise but the frequency on a properly meshed differential is to high for you to notice. You may want to pull the differential and check to see how work the gears are because you may have something lose in there.

Mine's done the same thing for years, and I don't even notice any more. Similar to yours, the sound is sort of like a whir or a whistle, and it occurs partway up the tach during acceleration. I also refilled my diff with new oil, with no change. I also noticed when I replaced my U-joints that there was some wear in the rear one, but even with new UJs the sound is still there.

So I just accepted the fact that my car, like its owner, is subject to occasional odd noises from its rear end.
