MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Tacho question / help?

Hi all,
Mk III midget newbie
Still experiencing the sticking tacho( thanks to all for explaining that this is " perfectly normal" :-) for a midget ) and although it usually come back after a smart tap to the gauge face, it's hacking me off!
Is there any thing I can do to service the tacho to stop this happening?
Cheers all,
colin

Always worth checking all wires and connections are clean, secure, tight and protected to and from and at other ends

note MGB related articles but might be info of use here as principles are same, read updates and follow hyperlinks as required

Hi Colin

Lots of tach threads point the finger at the electrics, however I just fixed mine which had a similar problem to yours. Its seemed to stick then read wildly!

Electrics were ok (there really isnt much to go wrong!)

I removed and dismantled the tacho, its easy but be careful/patient, I could hear something rattling inside, sure enough one of the small brass circular balance weights had dropped off its thread, I replaced it and use a bit of Loctite to secure.

I cleaned the rest of the tacho, treated a bit of rust and changed the seals, put iy back in the car this morning and my drive to work confirmed its all ok now!

Hi Colin,

Assuming all checks out ok (connections etc) and if you’re not as technical or as brave as Mark you could try one of the companies who repair/recalibrate Smiths instruments. I have posted two links for you to have a look at. I have just had my rev counter repaired and modified to work with EI by Speedy Cables and in my humble opinion the standard/service was very good if a little costly. If you are member of the MGOC then they operate on a “service exchange” basis for smiths gauges.

Hope you find a solution

an alternative I've no idea if they are any good - http://www.jdo1.com/

two mates had work done by speedy Cables, one was very pleased the other said their service was anything but speedy - just comments I've not had work done by them so don't know

John at http://www.jdo1.com/ knows his onions (and his gauges) and is a thoroughly nice chap. I have no hesitation in recommending him.
