MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Sunny Cornwall!

From living in a garage and only leaving on sunny days, my car now has to rough it - no cosseting and an out in all weathers life.
Living in Cornwall requires the ability to put up with a somewhat soggy climate and I am now finding and sorting out as many of Widgets leaks. This week we have had our first real rain since our partnership began and my task is to get rid of the interior swimming pool that has developed to the rear of the boot, in the bits below the lights. Where does the water get in to end up there?
I can't see how it can get in from the boot seal, because of the lip. I have sealed the badge fixings, so where does it get in?
J Mee

it gets in behind the lights
and just sit in the point behind the rear wheel arch
you can dril a smal hole on the inside to let it run out.
others have filled the whole cavity with some sort of resin.

I suppose you could also apply a bit of silicone sealant to both sides of the foam gaskets that fit between the lights and the bodywork.

Best of luck,

How tightly should the plastic of the lights butt against the chrome surround? Mine seems to have quite a large gap that won't tighten up, is it meant to be there?
J Mee

Not, not really

an old mate of mine used to have a mint condition fiat x19 that had lived in a heated garage its entire life and rarely ever got wet, then he moved to a new house without a garage.within 12 months its paint was peeling and it had rust apearing everywhere. spend as much as you can afford on a decent cover is my advice.

I have a feeling it won't be long before mine is starting to melt, the sea air here is cruel. I had an Enfield trail bike that was nearly all alloy and kept it in my brick shed - every time I went to ride it I had to clean the white fir off it. Unfortunately I can't afford a garage.

Ive noticed these "Event tents" are really getting cheap ... I found one the other day for around $40,

Is it possiable to get a high end car cover and a event tent that can be quickly set up and torn back down as the weather changes...maybe throw in some of those anti moisture packs in the interior

I feel for you, I do!

how about 1 of these?http://www.coverscars.co.uk/carfoldinggarages.htm

a tent from somewhere cheap might also work - depends how much space you have, midgets are definately 4-man tent sized :)
Rob Armstrong

Roy,
I lived in Cornwall once. I somehow cannot imagine using a folding car cover like that without quickly finding myself several miles away, probably in the sea!

guy the ones that iv seen have 1 half bolted to the floor, then you drive into it and pull it over like a clamshell and then lock the other end into an anchor point. as 1 end is firmly bolted down and the other end locked into the anchur point its not going to blow away. i remember years back i went camping with a load of mates, that night there was a major storm and when we came back from the pub there was 2 tents left out of the 9 we put up.9 very pi$$ed big blokes sleeping in two 2man tents is no fun.
