MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Steering box

My son noticed that the steering box on our Bugeye slides from side to side when the steering wheel is turned. It moves just a small amount, maybe 1/16". Should there be shims in place where the steering box is held in place by the mounting brackets? I don't think I've seen anything in the catalogues.

Tim,

Some catalogues do show shims, I've used masking tape to good effect for this purpose. IIRC a wrap or 2 as necessary and make sure you don't do the bolts up to tight as the brackets are easy to break as many, including myself, know from experience.

Strictly speaking Tim it's a steering rack - a steering box is entirely different.

As David's said, the problem is relatively easily solved - a wrap of thinnest gasket paper - or masking tape, around the rack where it's clamped will sort you out.
I failed MoT on that exactly that issue earlier this year.

Thanks for the feed back. I do recall paper 'shims' being necessary. Should be an easy fix.
Steve, appreciate you setting me 'straight'. Steering rack it is.
Cheers
