MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Starting after 17 years

I have 'rescued' a RB midget that has been in a lock-up for 17 years. It is reported to have been running well when put away. What is the best way of proceeding with the engine? Is it (1)replace all fluids, ensure it turns over fairly freely and fire away or (2) assume it is badly corroded, seized etc. and dismantle?

If the engine doesn't turn over freely, remove the plugs and pour some diesel in the plugholes. Give it some days rest. When the engine doesn't still turn over : get the engine out and dismantle.

I'd be a bit surprised if the bores are still in good nick after that long, dad's mini engine was unused for some 12 years and when started (it wasn't siezed) all seemed OK. 10 months down the line it's worn all the piston rings out and munched one of them, possibly from surface rust on the inside of the bores.

If it's not siezed, see if it works, then either drive and see what happens or whip the head off for a look at the bores, then rebuild as necessary :)

I am in the same boat as you, I have just started up my dads MGB after 20 Years without running. I am sure the engine will be fine as long as it has been kept inside.

Take the plugs out and put light machine oil in the bores. Do a full oil change including filter that way you are getting fresh oil in the top of the engine as after 17 years it will all be in the sump. Crank it over by hand and check for sticking valves etc. The engine should turn over nice and freely. Once you are sure the engine is free then try to fire it up. If anything is seized then you will feel it.
