MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Speedometer/chassis number x-reference

I know my RWA midget has the wrong speedo, but I don't know how to find the right one. Is there a list somewhere that x-Refs the speedo code (on the face and of the format SN-6142/06A 1376 or similar) to the chassis number or is there only one correct one for each model? Mine is a late 1972 model, just before they updated the steering rack etc. It is a UK car. If I find the code, I need to find a speedo - but one step at a time!

how do you 'know' you have the wrong speedo?
The number you quote is absolutely correct for a late '72 car and is calibrated for a 3.9 diff.
If it misreads perhaps you have the wrong diff, or maybe someone fitted a Morris Minor gearbox - externally identical but has the wrong speedo drive cog.

David,

I always thought the speedo drives were the same part no 2A3420.

Hi,

If you're comparing your speedo to a sat nav read out, the car speedo will be out, they normally read between 5 and 10% fast.

A lot of manufacturers in the 60's/70's did that to make the cars seem a bit more spritely (pardon the pun) than they actually were.

Thanks for this great help! I know it's wrong because 25 years ago I swapped my proper one into a scrapper that I had welded up and saved (poor student at the time) and the one I have is from a much older car. The serial number I quoted came from some web research so I'm happy that was correct!

I don't suppose anyone knows where I can get a speedo with this reference as an outright (not exchange) sale? Ideally one that doesn't need re-building, but I don't mind paying the right price for a good one.

Yep I'd go to Alan Davis at The Gauge Shop

There are two on Ebay (with 1376 tpm) now. Presumably for Hong Kong it would matter whether you were buying from the uk or the States.

Wow - you are all so helpful! Ordered and hopefully on it's way!
