MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Source new calliper pistons?

As the topic states.. were can I source god priced and quality calliper pistons and is there anything special to keep in mind with after market pistons?

Thanks

I don't think so. The old ones were plated, the new ones tend to be stainless.

I bought 2 NOS ones on ebay when I rebuilt my brakes. But unless you find a good deal they are actually surprisingly expensive. Add that to the small amount the seals costs and you may aswell buy a new caliper, you can get new callipers on ebay for about £30 each.

i should have NOS original BMC (still in the original boxes and in perfect condition) laying around somewere

The pistons are the same as Mini 8.4" calipers.

You can anodised aluminium caliper pistons for all minis from JONSPEED, so they should have them, for as Dave says they are the same as 8.4" mini calipers. They would save some unsprung weight. I use the Jonspeed ones in some Metro calipers on my car.

I bought two complete calipers for midget from MGBHive for less than pistons and seals. Much easier.

David Manners Group (in the Midlands) sell caliper pistons - 114713 for £6.90, or stainless steel 114713X for £11.70. Personally, I'd be inclined not to fit replacement whole calipers (I won't mention Chinese imports).

I got mine from minispares. SS ones - dad's had them on his mini for about 15 years and still perfect.

I bought a pair from Moss and VBL. The moss ones went back... The Chinese casting quality was not as good as the VBL units. Would love to have been able to get my hands on a NOS set, though.

Point about SS vs aluminum pistons, assuming they are correctly finished. SS is a very poor transmitter of heat, and aluminum is excellent, with steel in between. So hard usage with SS is less likely to boil the fluid. Yes, I have.
