MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Soundproofing

Just received the August edition of "Classics" and some of you may know they are restoring a midget. The current article shows them fitting Dynamat soundproofing. I previously had an 05 MG TF 135 which was plagued with water leaks round the door/hood seal. There was once over a bucket full of water in the foot wells and to remove the carpet and sound deading so I could hang it out to dry was a full days job. If water leaked into the Sprite I could remove the carpets in minutes but I wonder what the situation would be if I had sound proofing? Has anyone experience of Dynamat? Is it worth fitting and does it soak up water?

Cheers

Being well familiar with baling out a Sprite after heavy rain, I would not go near any fibrous acoustic matting in the cockpit. I do have a thick mat under the Hardura in the boot though, where the Frogeye's lack of a boot lid keeps things nice and dry. I can't remember if the stuff I used was Dynamat branded, but it was the same sort of thing, sticky backed bituminous sheet. Difficult to say how effective it is, with the Maniflow exhaust playing its tune. Ask the makers of Dynamat if it's solid bituminous or fibrous. If the former, you are fine, if the latter, once stuck down you have problems in the wet.

I also have some form of bituminous sound deadening sheet just like Les. No damp issues so far, but then I have a hardtop. Cannot imagine it would soak anything up though. Not even sure if it has much sound deadening effect. Cheap thick rubber sheet or similar may be just as effective....

I understand that the bituminous dynamat type of stuff dampens down panel vibration, so good on the inside of door skins and the rear wings. But it's not so good as a sound barrier. The modern equivalent of the old water-retaining carpet felt material is a closed cell foam which can be laid loose or stuck down. Being closed cell it doesn't absorb moisture.

I had some 'Silent Coat' 2mm soundproofing panels given to me, and used them on my Midge. One in each door and a couple under the bonnet. It is amazing how effective they are in stopping the drumming noise when closing the bonnet or closing the doors. They are bitumastic type panels with an aluminium skin. They can be easily cut with heavy duty scissors. They were fitted about 5 years ago and still show no signs of peeling.

Completed fitting Dynamat to the gearbox tunnel, bulkhead and floors. In the hope of quietening first gear noise I doubled up on the tunnel. My Sprite has a heritage Shell with no soundproofing at all and the Dynamat has made a real difference. Yes there is still noise but it is subdued and all harshness has disappeared. On a nice smooth road, with Dynamat and a 3.9 diff the car just hums along.
