MG Midget and Sprite Technical - screw thread guidance please..

Isn't it amazing how sometimes even the simplest jobs get complicated?
I have refurbished trim panels on my Mk4 Sprite and thought I would finish the job off properly with some new check straps and also fit the metal plates that normally accompany them. All went swimmingly on the nearside but the drivers side is a bugger.

As a result of the new trim being thicker, the inclusion of the plates and also the fact the inner panel is bent outwards slightly (for some unknown reason)the check strap is no longer long enough to reach through and grab into the thread of the nut welded on the other side of the panel.
After all that rambling my question is;

"What size and what thread are the screws that hold the door check straps on?"
I presume they are whitworth or BSF?

And
"where can I get a couple that are longer than the present ones?"
35 to 400mm would do.

aah they are UNF but what size?
cherokeev8

I would advise against 400mm bolts. Likely cause damage to your external paintwork - and to other vehicles on the road.

haha...typos strike again!! I meant 40mm (or old money equivalent) of course

Hmm I think those will be No10 UNF.
defo UNF and if a 1/4 UNF is too big it's almost certainly a No 10.

you can get them from here:

But delivery cost may be prohibitive for small qtys.

I've found Bearing Man Ltd (BML Hayley) to be really helpful when I've taken mystery bolts for them to identify the size and thread. They are also prepared to sell nuts, bolts and washers etc in very small quantities. I usually get at least 10 of whatever I'm buying but they'd be happy to sell them singly.

They have a website: http://www.bml-hayley.co.uk/ and there's at least one outlet in Essex (Thurrock).

according to info on MGOC Spares and Paul's excellent website page 'Translate Fastener Part Numbers' it's a RMP316 SCREW, CSK, RAISED HEAD, CHROME, UNF, NO.10 X 1"

Actually, I had it in my head that they were 2BA. I seem to recall running a 2BA tap through to clean them.
Lawrence Slater

Lawrence,
they are very close to each other. I'm guessing you used the 2BA as you didn't have a No8 UNF to hand ;)

2BA about .021" larger in dia and 4 turns per inch extra. Chances are, on a standard nut, you wouldn't notice the difference. I was taught (a long time ago and in general not exclusively) BA was used on electrical equipment and UNF on mechanical.

M McAndrew

Cheers Mike. Any yup. That explains why I had a BA tap to hand, rather than a UNF one. :).
