Rob: Why is rust like an iceberg? Exactly: what you see is only 1/8 of what is there. Chop it out and start again. I took off rear wings and the outer skin of the inner whhel arch before I found any really sound metal. Take a deep breath and reach for the angle grinder. You won't regret it..

The problem is there are no RWA repair panels!

I seem to remember sombody once saying that an arch repair for a fiesta was pretty close!!

What about Peter May on that side of the pond, Not sure he has steel patches, But I'm fairly certain he has fiberglass for RWA.

Rob,
Have you been to the Hive? thier list price for a genuine BMH8020 is 85 quid!

Rob, you need to be prepared for the innerwing section to be as bad (or worse than, even!) as the outer section. The rot occurs there because "grovel" collects in between the two skins just there and lets the metal eater start to graze.

I am fairly sure that Fiestas (early shape) had an almost identical shape and section around that area, certainly close enough to be cut out and juggled into the right shape, but the pair will need doing together IN and OUT to rebuild the section proper like!

Build out from the inner wing before you add the outer section.

If you make a card section of the part you need and take it along to the local panel man you should find something in his stock that you can work with.

A quick Google gives loads of hits on "car body repair panels"

If you are careful (you are, we've seen your work) you could cut a repair panel from plain sheet steel too and let it in where you need it

Update

Rob I travelled for a few miles today alongside a mk1 Fiesta (I didnt have to stay alongside him for that long but, well research purposes you see!)

The rear wings look a very close match for the Midget's RWA. The rim bulge looks a tad narrower, but still looks a very close match (visually)

I would definitely use these as a potential replacement, certainly as a very good basis for some slight changes to ensure a better job!

Thanks bill, thats good to know, i may buy one and play around as i want to flair the arches more too. I have been looking over a few articles on making arches and may give it a go. The PC article involves using a rod, curved to the correct radius and set at the right height and used as a former for the steel.

Rob

I managed to get hold of a pair of decent RWA wings off a scrap shell, I shall need to patch the lower rear but the rest was fine. The inner arch panels are still available and not to bad a price, I got mine from the Hive.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers Carl
