MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rover steptronic?

There are a lot of steptronic Rovers about with dodgy gearboxes going cheap. Would these be ok for a K conversion? Would the flywheel need changing? Or do they even have a flywheel?

Umm... I would think conversion would be an almighty pain in the bottom! Its a FWD gearbox (or mid engine RWD). Semi-auto with automatic clutch I believe so there will be some sort of jiggery Pokery to automate the clutch. Switch gear... Control units... Loads of stuff to sort!

Also, they are dodgey as you say!

Go for it :-D

I think he is asking if the K series engine from a Rover that's being scrapped because it has a steptronic box would be suitable for a donor engine. Does it have a flywheel or torque converter?

the basic engine will be the same, what is most likely to vary is the crankshaft. I'd just check old parts manuals or fiches for crank part numbers. Remind me tomorrow Rob - I have a lot of old fiche and a reader.

Ha ha, I am doing well at looking like a div at the moment. I think I might go and lie low for a while!

In an effort to redeem myself Rimmerbros only list one part for k series cranks flywheel etc for 1.8 mgf.

I would double check! I might be being stupid again!

I think I'm an idiot too as it was supposed to be in the K series section.

But hold on Michael, you've just sown a thought into my head. MGF into midget, mid engine RWD Midget, decent rear suspension AND with even less boot space. It's sure to be a winner!!!!

Talking about your own car there Prop? How many HG have you gone through?
M Le Chevalier

The steptronic engines tend to run fairly constant RPM (about 3500 I think) - the idea is to run at max torque for efficiency and have the gearbox take up the road speed differences so might have a unique engine calibration - obviously if you go carbs then the calibration doesn't matter, but I you plan to keep the EFI then it might worth checking out.

How does Prop know to pop his head up in the middle of these threads just like the gopher in caddy shack!
