MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rear Springs

I have read on here that the replacement springs available are generally not up to the job.

I have found a spring company local to me that is willing to retemper and rearch my original ones for about the same price as new ones.

Are there any dimensions that I need to specify when they do them for me?

Hi Tony
Depends on what you are using the car for?
Where are you in the Midlands as I need a pair re setting, perhaps its worth asking if its cheaper for two sets ?
I have a couple of spare sets that you could take some measurements from if your not too far away.

Hi Rob

I'm in Sheldon, near the airport using airport transfers tonbridge. The company are in West Brom, not sure they are about this week but I will try them tomorrow.

I only intend the use the car for normal road so standard I suppose. Its a MkII '66

Cheers

There was an issue with rubbish spring steel 2-3 years ago, resulting in new springs going saggy well before time. This has now been resolved as far as I know - certainly for the ones we have had through there was a noticable change in quality once that problem was sorted.

The main issue with sorting your old springs is whether any of the leaves have worn. If they have, then it is a waste fo time getting them retempered etc. Wear occurs most prominently on the underside of a leaf, just above where the leaf below finishes. Look for a ridge running across the leaf where the one beneath it finishes contact. You may have to reove built up dirts and a thin sking of corrosion to make a proper call on this.

If you do have a wear ridge there, the leaf will be weak and flex more there than it was intended to, so it will be forever softer than it should be regardless of what you try to do to fix it. (Unless you replace the worn leaf with new steel of the right size). Stress will also concentrate there, leading to eventual breakage.

If getting new leaves fitted, ensure they are the same thickness as original. An odd stiffer leaf will exacerbate wear in the leaf above it.
