MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Quick one on headlights (LH or RH)...

Perhaps a div question, but just making sure before I buy new...

Looking at the headlights that were on my car when I bought it, they are stamped "DRIVE LEFT" in the middle and "USA" on the edge. They are Wagner brand.

Are they lamps for left hand drive cars, i.e. USA, or does the "DRIVE LEFT" mean it is for cars that drive on the left side of the road and dip their lamps left, and "USA" is just where they were made.

I don't think my car was ever abroad, but who knows. It would not surprise me if they were just wrong!

Cheers,
Malcolm

Hmmm,

Ive never heard of handed head lights before, BUT because they are wagner they could well be, wagner is a low end automotive light bulb company here in the usa...personally I dont think you will notice a differance....nothing wrong with them, they just burn out once a year

It is the latter: for driving on the left.
Roadwarrior

Hey Roadwarrior, thanks for that.

Prop, lamps are "handed" so that when the beams are dipped they shine into the side of the road and not into the path of oncoming traffic (thus dazzling the driver).

Probably not much of an issue in America when your country roads are six lanes wide and where a midget is barely as high as the average cars front bumper! :-D

I have some Ex-USA lamps that dip vertically, not to one side. Is that normal for the US market?
r thomas

I have some as well. They were removed from some US imports in Holland, as they weren't legal.

Wl that is interesting...

According to wikipedia, the 7 inch sealed round head lights are handed, but quick call to autozone there saying they were not aware of the headlamp being handed

Im pretty sure I just stuck mine in without a secound thought as to being handed

But yes our high and low beams are just that.. one aims high and the lower normal setting is the lower

Dave.
When I took my LHD import midget for an MOT I was told that it was legal to have vertical dip ones but not ones that dipped the WRONG way.

If vertical dip is legal[I believe it is in Europe], then why doesnt everyone have them as it would save manufacturers having to make two versions?
