MG Midget and Sprite Technical - power problem
Hi, I hve got a problem I don't understand. When I want a big acceleration, my engine stop to increase RPM at nearly 2500 rpm. No other sign than a sensation the clutch does not transfert the power to the wheels. But RPM are not increasing, so probably not a cluth problem. If I stop accelerate and return on the throttle pedal more slowly, the RPM increase. The first time it arrives was on 4th gear and a lot of time in third gear. Sometime after increasing RPM to 4500 on second gear before changing in third, and then it occurs. I have a SU fuel pump and an electric tacho. So I ask myself if an electric problem could occure this type of problem. Any advice? laurent |

Sounds to me as though the fuel to the carburettors is lacking the times you are saying that the car is poor is on high fuel demand, have you an inline filter that could be blocked? Maybe the one in the SU pump? |

... in similar vein... kink in the fuel line? Poor elect connection to pump.... A |

... perished fuel line... |

I have a plastic box fuel filter just before the carbs. The box seems to have enought fuel in it, so the fuel line seems to be ok, as the pump. But I realize, I never changed the filter since I have bought the car in 2001. I will change it and see if it is better. thanks laurent |

Im thinking the valves are out of adjustment due to a worn rocker assembly....That was a problem I had a year ago, and doing the samething as described....and still does to a degree....I had to file the grove out of the rocker pads and that fixed alot of it, but being that I filed into the soft metal....I got another rocker assmbly for just incase If I dont get around to rebuilding my engine this next winter. prop |

Fuel problems are all electrical in nature and ignition problems are all caused by fuel ;-) Bad plug wires? Bad vacuum advance? Timing? I am sorry that I do not recall what engine you are dealing with... David "always a different opinion..." Lieb |

Thanks david, Thats why my wiper motor keeps blowing a fuse, maybe a bottle of "heat gas treatment" will cure the problem....lol prop |

Opps....then agian you probably dont run your wiper motor thur your coil....LOL. prop |

David is right so often with this sort of problem As most jobs I was sent to on breakdowns were reported as fuel fault, "please fix carburettors that have mysteriously packed up after years of happy working..." Which were so often repaired by adjusting the points or replacing the condenser, resetting a dizzy body that worked its way loose and rotated off its timing location, or just making good connections on the side of the dizzy body and the coil connections. If you do get flat spots however its very easy to forget to put oil down the dashpot damper tubes so the mixture stays reasonably under control, look down the reservoir tubes to see if there is any in there |

I have check the dashpots, and the level of oil is very low. I will have some maintenance this WE: a new fuel filter, 2 new air filter (they realy need to be changed) end the level of oil in the dashpot. And then I will see if it is better. Thanks a lot laurent |

Laurent, try to perform the sprint without the fuelcap. Maybe the ventholes are blocked and you have a vacuum in the tank. Been there:-( Bas |

Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Try disconnecting the fuel line to the carbs, putting the hose into a container & turn the pump on to see if you have a good flow. Brad |
