MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Pictorial of RB midget front suspension rebuild

Hi guys

I created a web page for anybody that is thinking about doing their front suspension but are not sure they have the technical ability to do it.

It targets the guys that have never done it .. but
would like to give it a try.

Hey Michael,

Really great documentation.

I've got two comments if you don't mind.:)

1). I don't much like those forked type track rod end seperators. They put pressure on the ball and socket. And if the shaft is really tight in the steering arm, as if often the case, you just might damage the rod end. Obviously if you are replacing them, it doesn't matter, but if reusing them, it does.=====
=====I use a G-clamp type. It has a forked end, that clamps under the steering arm, and the bolt is tightened down on the rod end bolt, and this pushes the rod out of the steering arm with out hammering or levering.

2). If the inner wheel bearing splits when removing it, there seems to be a concencus that it shouldn't be put back together again, because the seperating and joining again, can damage the bearing surfaces.

But petty points really. :)

Yes a very well documented procedure. Great job! but I'm wondering if the hub does just slide off all the time? One of mine did but the other won't budge. Plenty of banging and using the road wheel as a slide hammer and still no joy. So you need an extra step in there for me. *How to get the hub off when it's stuck on. :)

This is awesome!

It's a job on my 'to do' list as I have a small crack in one of my wishbones, but didn't have the nerve to start it as I thought I would get to a point and get stuck.

Somewhere on the BBS I have read horror stories about springs and Kingpins.

I am now inspired to give it a crack - thanks Michael!

Absolutely spit on Michael. I had previously posted a comment in general midget and sprite threads asking about interest in this type of information sharing - and got quite mixed response ( see 'how to do it' thread)
I think its excellent even for those who have done it and need to remind themselves again..

I was going to do a gearbox rebuild thread like this . it may just be the motivation I need.. thanks

Thanks guys ..

Ok ... you have to remember this. I didn't have a clue on how to do this. I .. like many others .. had read about the horrors of doing this job. I'm an ok backyard mechanic .. but .. have never touched the suspension. This was just my journey .. and .. hopefully .. those who find this thread will take all of the excellent subsequent comments and add them to the info they learn from the page.

I could have gone into a lot greater detail about what "could happen" .. and .. every little washer and all kinds of things. I honestly think that if you follow this guide that you will be able to handle the little things that come up with any job like this.

Also .. I live over on the MG Experience Forum.

And it's really interesting to see what is approved of and accepted on one forum and " a bad idea " on another forum. Example : the inner bearing thing. When removing it .. it just isn't made to have any kind of banging on it from the inside. It actually comes apart easily when doing this. I actually think a brand new bearing will come apart if banged from the inside. Anyways.. when you put it back together .. and repack it .. it feels like a very usable bearing. This is just an example and is obviously an opinion.

About 20 years ago I wrote about 9 sides of A4 paper for Mascot Magazine on suspension and door rebuilds. Does anyone have a copy? Might be worth resurrecting it?

fabulous web page Michael, really well done and easy to understand, reckon you're going to get a lot of hits over the coming months, years, now then..... what's next on your rebuild list!!!!

another vote for this... great idea... I think between us, we could put together a BBS manual!

I take photos of all the work I do... so perhaps I should put something together on my major jobs. Particularly the rear suspension - which isn't in any of my manuals!

Now this is a really nice initiative, good work Mike!
