MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Performance with Standard Filters
Has anyone got any experience of mild tuning of the 1275 but still using the standard pan type filters? I'm trying to keep the car looking standard under the bonnet but also want a bit more power. Engine spec will be 1275, 256 cam, PB Econotune head, 10:1 CR, reworked carbs and inlet and decent manifold and exhaust. So its not going to be a fire breathing monster but I'm wondering if the standard filters will restrict it too much. I'd also really like to get some full radius stub stacks inside them but not sure if that's possible. I'm wondering whether I could help things by either making the inlet trumpets on the pans slightly bigger or by adding some holes out of sight.
I know you can get K&N filters for the std pans but I'm a bit reluctant to spend the £100 required! Any thoughts or experience? Thanks John |

Plenty of thoughts, zero experience! Build as you describe then book into Peter Burgess for a rolling road session and he'll then be able to see what power your engine is developing and maybe able to suggest/advise on how much if any bhp, the standard filters are restricting. Or maybe ask him to build it and see what he says about the filter choices? |

A trip to Peter’s is a definite, I’d rather have it as I want it before I go though. Engine is all built and fitted but probably won’t be ready to run for a month or two. Won’t be ready to drive for 6 months so I’ve got plenty of time! I’ve had a few ideas to get the stub stacks to fit inside and get more air in so I might start experimenting. I might be making too much of it and maybe the standard pans and filters would be ok with regular filter changes. |

Surely it'd make more sense to ask Peter if he knows before you start, sort of prevention rather than cure sort of thing. |

It does Nigel but I suspect that could be a minefield for Peter as if it doesn't turn out as expected then it can be a question of 'You said such and such but it hasn't worked' etc. |

Good of you to consider that type of thing. I was more thinking of asking Peter if he'd had any experience of himself or customers keeping the pan filters covers on but going for more performance and any results of such.
I remember a photo on here(?), and Peter telling me, of him trying out something like, a 10 foot cold induction pipe(?) on a car, just to see. I know he refused to guarantee I'd be able to play the piano after one of my visits to his rollers . . . which is a shame because it'd be nice for me if I could play a musical instrument. :) |
