MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Panel thickness

Hi, Just a quick question. I have a 76 midget needs some body repairs, but can't find anwhere where it lists the thickness of sheet metal I will need, can any body help please?.

I just go to my local metal shop an 'feel' the offcuts -- i buy what feels right

It does vary with different panels and the actual thickness can be quite hard to judge with painted finishes. But generally bodywork panels are in SWG 20 which equates to 0.92mm. Easier to get hold of is 1.0mm steel sheet which is close to SWG 19 (1.05mm) I use 1.0mm and also 1.2 and 1.6mm for some of the heavier panels and brackets.

SWG 20 = 0.92
SWG 19 = 1.05
SWG 18 = 1.23
SWG 17 = 1.45
SWG 16 = 1.60

UK "guage" is measured as Standard Wire Guage" (SWG) I have an idea that the guage in USA is American Standard Guage (ASG) but I don't know if it measures the same. If you know the guage equivalents in metric, then you can double check against the conversion table I gave above. That is from memory, but I think it is correct.

The US gauges can be significantly different to the SWG used in the UK.

See http://www.simetric.co.uk/siwire.htm .

A constant source of confusion as many don't bother to mention the gauge system refered to so best to be specific or give the thickness in inches or mm.
