MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Painting Preperation Again

Hi All

I read the earlier post reggarding Paint Preperation and it has made me curious as to what options I have to improve the lokk of the paintwork on my '66 MkII midget.

There are a few areas that will need to be taken back to bare metal to remove rust, but the majority of the car appears to be rust free, but the paint is blistered and crazed in many areas.

So is it feasible to just remove the old polish etc then rub down the existing paint with 800 grit or smoother and and then spray with a suitable topcoat?

Also what type of paint do I need 2K? and can anyone recommend a supplier in the Midlands.

Thanks for any help

Tony

Tony,

You could do as you suggest.... BUT it will come back to haunt you.

My suggestion is if your paintwork is not good now, take it all back to bare metal, sort out the faults and start again with a good etch primer / wash followed by a primer filler, then all your colour coates.

Preparation IS the key to succes....!

Tony. Mark is absolutely correct. If the paint is cracked in places it's probably because it's had lots of previous paint repairs and no matter how well you flat it back it will just crack again.
The best way, as Mark says, is get the old paint off and start afresh. You may also find some previous filled areas. If you do and you are using paint stripper, the stripper will attack the filler too, so it will need to come completely off. You could of course use a sander to get it off which will take away the need to thoroughly rinse all the stripper off.
It will be a long and messy job but if you take your time and don't cut corners the result will be worth it.

I found an easy cheap way to strip a car is to get a gal of acetone and a wad of green scoure pads and lots of rags,,, wash it on, scour it down wash it off ...do a hole panel at one time before going to the next. carfule acetone will eat everything that rubber and plastic also... and use chemical gloves you can stip a car in a saterday...lot easyier then sanding and dealing with stripper fluids

Where a skim of filler is needed, is it better to apply this directly onto bare (and keyed) metal or is it better to prime (acid etch) first. I have done both ways in the past but am not sure which is best.

Thanks for the replies, I thought it sounded too easy....

It looks like I will be driving it this summer with odd coloured wings as well as the crazed paintwork.

Has anyone tried soda blasting with the Eastwood soda blaster available from Moss (but cheaper elsewhere)?

Regards
