MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Oil surge

watching an on board video from a few years back, I have noticed under heavy braking and cornering oil pressure momentarily drops to an indicated 20psi comments please

please see fuzzy video (the sound has been messed up when converting to avi sorry)

Research is inconclusive - a lot of racers suffer this, some ignore it and some don't, it doesn't seem to lead to premature blow-ups. If it worries you, buy a baffled sump (P May or Mark Turner).
David Smith

This happens to road-going midgets when oil low and braking hard. I used this effect as oil-level indication!

Like David says, use a baffle or add a little more oil.

Thanks, for prompt responses - i'm normally busy looking out of the window at the point when it drops! the cat now has a 20psi light fitted - which did not illuminate at Oulton last year, maybe it was a little low on oil as you point out?

Thanks

I regularly get down to that pressure in both my race cars, even with baffled sumps. When the last bwas stripped down at the end of season no problems whatsoever.

Put an adapter in the block with a low pressure switch. I have a really bright LED in the scuttle and although it's small you can't miss it, no matter what you are looking at.

John Collinson

the car has a horizontal plate on top of the standard baffle the plate has lots of small holes pierced in it. I guess I will leave well alone..

I'd like to know what your cat thought of that!

Maybe it's fitted in a pre-made location far from its eye-balls...

Thin oil (Not 20-50) or old oil that has thinned and overdue a change. Cheap oil. Oil is very hot (and thin) + what everyone else said.
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

Daniel,

I do not use cheap oil, and it does not stay in the engine long enough to age too much!
