MG Midget and Sprite Technical - New Flame Thrower Distributor
| Am wondering if anyone has used one yet. At 160-200 dollars, it's tempting to get the whole thing... it includes electronic points replacement, distributor body and cap. However, I don't want it if it's Chinese, and it doesn't seem to have the vernier adjustment knob. Also, I wonder if it has a "one size fits all" A-Series advance curve... actually, the description doesn't even say if it has mechanical advance in addition to the vacuum. Still, with a bit of wobble in my shaft and a desire to finally get the ignition spot on, I'm thinking about it. |

| I have one on my B. The advance curve is one size fits all. The bearings are plastic, they're probably only good for 50,000 miles. Quality is generally very good, although some caps fail at 10,000 miles. If you replace a worn distributor with it you will notice a huge improvement. If you're after performance the Flamethrower is not the way to go, if you want ignore it reliability for a good price then it is very good value. The distributor is actually a 45D, your 25D cap and rotor button will not fit. I'm very happy with the one I have on my roadster and will probably buy another for my GT. |

| Id have a look at the duel point mallory unilite, (with the elec. chips) also have a look at the aldon 1-2-3 dist. they both have a wide range of advance curve settings. prop |

| I asked Moss about it, as the pertronix phone line shunted me to voice mail. I was told that it does have a mechanical advance mechanism, and like Wiz, one size fits all. Wiz, would you say it fits okay for you? I wonder when to worry about my 25D being to far worn to work as well as the Pertronix... if I put the Petronix electronics in it. Wobble... well, not huge, but I can certainly see and feel it. I just had it out, but was rushed and didn't measure it precisely. It would be nice to retain the micro adjustment of the 25D. Prop, the Mallory is to much money for me. Your suggested setup would be about $400. I've got a stock motor, and all I want is the smoothest running. |

| IIRC they have no vac advance (so economy will be affected). I'd go for a standard dissy with vac and Pertronix. |

| This is a new Petronix distributor with Ignitor fitted? If so they do with and without vacuum advance. The curve is generic but in the USA APT can recurve to a specific curve for you. |

| Yes, new Petronix with Ignitor fitted. It has vac advance, and it was said it had mechanical as well. Moss sales even stated the generic curve was better than stock, though this seems surprising to me. |

| Steve-I fitted a Flamethrower to my A series back around October. I had a lot of rough running issues with the original dizzy, and the Flamethrower made a big difference. |

| Jim, did your old dizzy have the petronix ignition module? |

| The curve works fine for me. The distributor is set for ported vacuum, not manifold (on the B at least) I started with it hooked to manifold vacuum and was not happy. I installed a vacuum port in my rear carb and have been very happy since. I know the dizzy can probably give better power if I have it recurved but it is so much better than my worn old dizzy that I am perfectly happy. |

| My old dizzy was regular points and condenser. It actually wasn't the original that came with the motor, but a 25D that was a rebuilt unit from one of the major auto stores. I had a lot of trouble with rough idle and backfiring even at idle. I changed points and condenser a few times with very little changing. With the Flamethrower installed it really made a difference in smoothing out idle, revving and overall performance. I looked at the other dizzys and personally this was the way to go. The dizzy fits right onto the drive dog without modification, connections are simple, and I don't have to worry about setting points and having condensers fail. It has a vacuum advance just like the old one. |

| trade in your old dissy at autozone and get a pertonix chip for it....the trade in are cheap...less then $75 I saw a modification somewhere you can make to the dissy where you put in a ball bearing set, and keeps the dissy from wearing out. Check this out ...how cool!!! I like It!!! | Might be worth a little caution before right hand drive car owners gallop off to the scrappy. he says that it gets closer to the bonnet on minis because it is taller, I'm sure it would be ON the steering column on my car Shame, 'cos it is a very good dizzy |
