MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Negative battery cable

Just had to replace the battery (about 9 yrs old according to the date code on it) so it had done well. I realised then that the negative cable rather than being a short run to the bulkhead, runs all the way down to the engine/bellhousing bolt just above the starter (1275 midget) then all the way back up again to the bulkhead. All well sleeved to prevent chafing, but surely somewhat unnecessary? After all there is a perfectly good earth strap between engine and chassis, and another between gearbox and chassis. Has anyone else found this belt and braces approach on their car?

That is strange...mine is just bolted to the bulk head

My guess is he was.trying.to get a."super ground" by trying to ground both the drivetrain and the body togather at the same time

If you loose ground on that, your intitled to a really bad day...haha

Prop and the Blackhole Midget

Dom,
I'm almost sure this or something similar like has been discussed here before, perhaps a couple of years back

yours sounds excessive with another two other earth straps on engine and g/box as most of us just have one from bellhousing to chassis

I'd guess the run to the engine/bellhousing was to ensure a good earth for the highest draw item of the starter motor, a reasonable idea but shouldn't be necessary

to run from there back to the bulkhead again also seems excessive when a twin short lead could have went to the bulkhead

sounds like PO might have had some earthing or starting issues previously

is it your car with other strange electrical methods or way of wiring or am I confusing your car with another

Well given the cost of copper, I wouldn't duplicate it myself. But given that you already have it, I'd keep it.
