MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Morning all! Introduction, me and rusty Midget!

Morning all! I've heard word that we're full of midget people round here so thought I'd say hello!

I've a rather rusty Midget, 1972, been sat either in the garage or on my drive for at least 5 years! I took on one too many projects at the same time and it's been largely ignored! Now could well be the time for it to be fixed, probably!

Brief summary is, cheap and rusty! I'm fine with the mechanical bits, well, a lot are knackered but at least I know what I'm doing with most of them. Bodywork is going to be interesting, I can weld well, but there's a lot to do. Floor, sills, arches, boot, etc.

Just need to make it an undercover home, I just evicted it from one place, it's nearly summer now though!

I've been having an archive trawl, it's rather reassuring to see/read about all the other Midgets in similar states :)

cheers
Dave

Good luck with it Dave. Looks like a lot of hard work ahead but it'll be worth it. Welcome to the BBS.

Mick struggling with the wiring

Hi & welcome :)

another yorkshireist :) looks like a lot of effort that, but it'll be definately worth it. Being able to weld is a bonus!

Pop along to Ye Jolly Farmers Inn in Dalton this saturday if you can, it's where all the cool midget people hang out ;p (midget not required as transport!)

Hi over here Dave

You'll be able to check the chassis and body numbers when your book turns up (not that it really matters most of us have custom/modified cars)

LOL - isn't THAT rusty - I can still see paint on it!

Was it registered in 1972, but built before - hence the square arch, rather than the 1972 introduction of the RWA?

Good luck with the bodywork :) Yes, there are lots that are worse, and it is nice to realise that - see you at Midget50!!!!!

Dave,

"It's rather reassuring to see/read about all the other Midgets in similar states :)"

Too right, I am glad to see your Midget in as bad a state as mine! :-)

A big welcome!

Evening Dave.
Will be interesting to see how we both get on with our respective wrecks. Another couple of evenings work and I'll have a rusty shell ready for blasting/cutting/welding or scrapping.

Thankyou to all for the welcomes!

It was registered in 1972, though I confess I've no idea when it was made. My manuals and books that are in the post as we speak may reveal more.......

It'll probably need a lot of panels or repair panels, not quite sure what as yet but I expect the list will be long and extensive.

I wonder if a 3 year old can be taught to weld, he's very keen to "fix it".

I'll take some more close up photos, but it's quite disturbing what you find when you look at it up close, don't want to put myself off too much.....

Dave,
Your challenge is to get the car fixed up quickly enough so you get more than a few month's use out of it before he passes his test and nicks it off you! Better get a move on!

Keep a look out on e-bay for unused repair panels. They do come up regularly and can be quite a saving from buying all new if you can get them as the opportunity presents itself.
Guy

for whole panels(?) you might want(?) Ashley Hinton, sometimes of this parish, his web site contact and eBay shop (or direct to him) for other bits

http://shop.ebay.co.uk/ashleyhintonmgparts2002/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

he's gone a bit shiney recently but his heater tap is the best I've found

Dave I'd like to see two photos from you, one of your full Midget library in pristine condition and the other when they're fingerstained and broken spined

:)
