MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Minimum tyre width on 5' wheel
What's the narrowest tyre you can get on a 5" wheel? Cheers J.
Jeremy Cogman
145 I guess. I have a 155/80/13 on a 5 inch minator and it looks ok so a 145 can be done. Bas BUT 145 looks skinny why not settle for 155?

I'm also looking at putting the 155's on a 5" rim, it means I can use my existing tyres. Have you seen those minators for sale £60 for five? I was keen but a bit to far from me. Kevin

Jeremy A 5-foot wheel is a bit extreme!

Tee hee.

Jeremy, I would not go less than a 155 on a 5" rim, and preferably a 165. A 145 will be very stiff and tend to 'skip' - not nice to drive. Is 165/70x13 available? That would give virtually the same rolling radius as the standard 145/80x13. Richard

Jeremy, I have 155x13 on 5,5J, it looks and drives fine. But it needed spacers on the rear axle of the frogeye Flip

I like to keep the tread width close to the same width as the rim. A 5" rim is 127mm wide and figuring the section width of most tyres is about 20% wider than the tread I'd say that a 155 would be almost perfect. You could probably run a 145 without problem, but keep the pressure up a bit over normal to prevent the sidewalls from rolling under with hard cornering and scuffing.

Jeremy, I use 155 on 5" Minator rims and they work fine. Daniel's book on modifying the Sprite and midget suggests 5" rims as the optimum for the following tyre sizes; 155R-13, 155/70R-13 or 165/70R-13. Chris

By careful when buying wheels, as a number of fakes are out there, they do not have any country of origin stamped or manufacturers branding are being sold "as Minilite type wheels, these wheels are not round on the inside and touch the callipers say nothing about what they are made of. If you ring Minilite direct (01952-620215) speak to Mr Harris he can sort you out. Minilite make the K&N Minator, and are marked as such. Be warned, and don't ask how I know!!!
