MG Midget and Sprite Technical - midget 1500 rear spring

good aflernoon
I have been given a rear spring as a spare for my car however the small clamps [4 of] around the leaves leave a little to be desired. Anyone know where these could be purchased Norfolk uk

Only one? to be of use you really need 2 matching springs as you might end up with one side higher than the other if you only replace 1.

good morning there is method in my madness....If I have one spring go on my car, I will ,with a bit of luck, have a reasonably level car fitting a used one. From these forums it would seem that you are very unlikely to get a perfect matching pair of new ones.

I am not sure where you get the idea from that you won't get matching springs - however, your best bet is to contact the MGBhive in Parsons Drove near Wisbech - they also do second hand parts, so may be able to help

New springs are crap - I got 2 and they are badly made - the holes at either end are not sqaure to the sprng which has the effect of shifting the axle an inch to the left or right... if they are extreme this will cause a wheel to rub on the wheel arch

If it helps, those parts are known as rebound clips. You may have trouble finding ready-made ones narrow enough for the midget. I used straight ones that I then bent to shape using cardboard templates.

As Gryf says I made some replacements and just used some flat steel cut, bent and drilled appropriately. If you are struggling then find a local motor or coach spring manufacturer / refurbisher. There are small companies all over the UK doing this sort of work for leaf springs to the heavy transport and plant trade. My local gave me some rubber for the bushings and told me to just try thin steel that could be easily bent. They would have made me some:
1) relatively expensive
2) they wanted the car for a week or so
Took me less than an hour to make two and fit. Look carefully under the spring where the clip is located, there should be a peg to locate the clip and stop it moving so you need a corresponding hole in the clip. I just compressed the spring with a G cramp and hammered the tabs over. Passed MoT no problem and has survived 2500 miles so far no problems.
They also temper springs and can re temper old ones to make a 'pair'. Success depends on how bad the ones you ask them to re temper are but obviously the off side spring gets the most wear.
