MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Mechanical fuel pump sourcing

Hi

I am on the look out for a new mechanical fuel pump (17H98 for Austin Healey MkI or II). Anyone bought one recently and happy with quality and fit? Prices vary and I not sure on what I would be getting.

I was wondering about fitting a Mini one (AZX1818, noting Minispares do a non-genuine version as well as ones for 1275cc engines) as has simpler fuel connections.

Thanks

I’ve just bought and fitted one from Moss, seems decent quality but I’ve nothing to compare it to as it’s a new build. Not used it yet as the rest of the car needs finishing!

The frightening part of it is the cost of the metal fittings for the fuel hoses. From Moss they are £30 and nearly as expensive at other places. In the end I bought some 1/4 tube and eventually found the right fittings. You will probably have old ones but if not let me know and I’ll get the part number for them.

I'd try Rimmer Bros or Sussex Classics. Both are very reliable. The pump is an AC Delco unit, probably a type Y13 if my memory is right. Available in several versions, long arm, short arm, rebuildable and otherwise. They are still in common use to this day, mostly on small static engines. 1500 midgets use them too - they seem generally reliable and easy to rebuild if they go wonky.

Thanks John and Greybeard for the helpful replies.

I've gone for a Mini one that the flexible tube fits directly on and uses a spacer from the block.

John - if you have the part number for the hose fitting that would be interesting, as likely to be a National Pipe Thread as found on the tank end as some brake fittings or of the size available from Merlin Motorsport for fuel fittings.

Grey - I remember AC Delco pumps from my Mini days. I can find copies, e.g. https://www.malpasonline.co.uk/s/c/tractor-parts/engine-filters/fuel-delivery-parts/fuel-pumps-components/?Page=1

but not sure if the AC ones are still in production. Note Burlen SU makes some and can buy some genuine Rover ones for the Mini (maybe AC produced).

Cheers

Mike, here’s the union you need for the standard mechanical fuel pump copper pipe. You also need a 1/4 brass olive.

Automec are my new go to place for unions and the like. It’s where Willy found the union I needed to use a 3/16 pipe on the 1/4 slave cylinder. They have decent postage costs as well, I think it was 90p for the unions.

In a way I wish I’d got a Mini pump with the push on connectors but at least it looks original I suppose.
