MG Midget and Sprite Technical - LED Bulbs

Has anyone gone down the led bulb route yet
P Willoughby

Rear brake light bulbs yes.
Can't say that I've noticed any difference except they draw a lot less power. They may look significantly brighter on a foggy day at 200 meters but I haven't tested that theory.#In truth they look pretty much the same as my old bulbs.
Gary lazarus

I like the 'drawing less power' idea. These little engines aren't exactly mega-watt power generating stations as they are. When I'm at a red light, foot on the brake, my directional signal slows down it's blink rate significantly.

LOL yeah i noticed my headlight dip slightly when im ideling in traffic. Ive just orderd tail/brake and side leds via ebay just yeaterday so cant comment on who great they are yet. I also bought amber repeater ones but slightly concerned re these as the flasher unit may not get enough heat to work correctly??

"When I'm at a red light, foot on the brake" I know that is common these days but it's not a recommended way to drive (opver here anyway), as it causes unnecessary dazzle at night to the driver behind.
David Smith

David, I would definitely agree that point. I would much prefer to wait with handbrake on and foot hovering over the brake pedal, but ready to give a quick double-flash of the brake lights when I see another vehicle approaching from behind.

I would appreciate the ebay ID numbers for the S/T and side lamps - I am sure other would to

>>hovering over the brake pedal, but ready to give a quick double-flash of the brake lights when I see another vehicle approaching from behind.<<

I'm with you, I do a routine of flashing the brake lights whilst stationary and leaving space in front of me every since a friend of a friend had his car badly rear-ended whilst sitting at the end of a queue at a dual-carraigeway roundabout, that could have been very nasty luckily only bad damage to the car

I could well be wrong (as usual) but Ithink I read somewhere that some of these bulbs can be very directional a lot more visable from certain angles than others

I'm considering trying these:

Voltage drops cause dim lights in a Spridget. Leds can cure that (in certain directions) as they are less volt dependant. The real cure is here:

See tech relays
When I replaced the leads to the headlamps the tail lamps suddenly where twice as bright! RPM had no influence on brightness anymore.
Be aware that most leds are negative ground.

I changed virtually all the bulbs to LEDs. I like the idea of fit and forget. The brake lights draw much less power, so the brake light switch shouldnt suffer (lots of folk were fitting relays - crap modern switches I think ) For the indicators I had to fit an electronic flasher

Neil... Could you tell me where you got an electronic flasher relay? all those on ebay seem to be 3 pin but we need a 2 pin?
mgdan2

I bought it at the classic car show NEC a couple of years ago. Its a 3 pin one tho (not for my Sprite)
neil munn

Heres a link to electronic flasher relays. This place is in Australia but ships worldwide.

Hi, I am also interested in upgrading to LED lights as shown on the links above.

One question though, will the tail/stop light work in the same manner if it is replaced with an LED one (i.e the equivilant of having 2 filaments?)

Mark
Mark Whitmore

URGENT! anyone following the ebay links be aware that the side and indicator bulbs advertised as MG midget are push it type not bayonnet which is on my car, My order arrived today and i have fitted the tail/brake leds which are great but the other two items are incorrect.
mgdan2

Mark, assuming you are supplied with the correct bulbs, they will work the same. They will have the same offset pins so that you can only fit them one way

Can somebody UK based tell me where in the UK i can safely buy BFS989 Replacemnts side and BFS382 replacement indicator LEDs, after my eperience with ebay i need a reliable source!
mgdan2

I just want a pair of LEDs I can fit behind the green things in the dash so I can see my indicators are blinking on a sunny day.
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

They make green LEDS. What is the issue?
Trevor Jessie

Trevor if you can find some that fit the bulb holders for the dashboard indicator display there is no 'issue' and I'll buy some. In fact they can be white so long as they fit the bulb holders for the dashboard indicators.
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

Green would be better since the lens is filtering out all colors but greens. No sense in generating light that is not being used.

Next time I'm fiddling with the Midget I'll pull a bulb and see how difficult it would be to have some made.
Trevor Jessie

http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk search under Rover/Mg then select vehicle and it pops up a window with all bulbs and leds replacements for tail, indicator and side lights etc
