MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Interior Carpet Kit Adhesive

I ordered an interior carpet kit (Carelli Brand) which arrived "sans directions"...

Anyone have any suggestions as to the best type of spray (or brush on) adhesive or glue to use? I also plan on re-wrapping the kick panels and other vinyl covered (non-carpeted) interior surfaces. Would another type of adhesive be more appropriate for the vinvl versus the transmission tunnel / rear deck and carpeted floors?

I have found a few sites on the web which show the general sequence of installation events - but nobody seems to be mentioning any adhesive products...My first reaction would be find some type of 3M spray product..

Please refrain from any references to "sticky wickets"...Thanks from any comments from across The Pond..

Wow,

And I thought I was the only one that when playing with glue, My wicket gets all sticky....LOL

Okay. Im sorry...but that was funny.

Go to an aumotive upulstry shop and ask what they recommend, most of the time they are vary helpful, you might be able to purchase it from them and get some free inside tips...it only cost me $325 to have my carpet cut, glued and installed...that was several years ago, im guessing around $500 for the same thing, you might try that...that was high end automotive carpet included, about 6 sq. yards with 2sqyd left over.

Mike: I just installed new carpet in my 67 midget, and I used double sided carpet tape. I used 2 rolls of the indoor/outdoor tape. Really works nice, no mess, and the carpet sticks and is in place on the first try. Cut and fit each piece, apply tape to the car body, press carpet into position. On the trans tunnel, I taped the back end, and screwed the front end. When I need to check the transmission oil level, I just have to remove 4 screws and pull back the carpet to have access to the plug.

Mike,

I used 3M General Trim Adhesive #08088 when I did my interior last year. Took two cans.

Victoria British has (or had) a good illustrated guide for installing Spridget interiors. Give them a call and ask for SM.18. If you can't get it, let me know and I'll scan mine and send it to you.

I usually use 3M Super Duty Spray adhesive for the carpets and the 3M Regular on the panels. But I like the idea of the double sided tape that Joe mentioned. sounds easy.

I installed the same carpet in my 73 MG last week. I used 3m 90 Spray Adhesive. 2 cans. Did a very good job.
One warning. Do this with lots of ventilation and not on an empty stomach. Also not when the weather is too hot. Whole thing took me three hours to do last week. With one seat in, I started getting dizzy and really had a rough evening. Either dehydrated though my buddy said I should have done this after eating more than a muffin.
We live and learn. The only hassle I had was the rear arches.
Good luck, take your time, measure twice and cut once.

Prop:
I already bought a pre-cut kit (of somewhat dubious quality...) so I don't have to spend the big $bucks on the interior. Good idea about talking with the pros from Dover...my local interior guy has since been converted to a collision shop...

Joe:
I am still leaning towards a somewhat more permanent glue solution although I might use that double stick tape trick for some hard to reach pieces that might need to be peeled away (ie.., trans fill plug and I noticed a rubber inspection plug near where the emergency brake handle assembly is attached to the rear of the trans tunnel...I would think that on a hot (change that..VERY hot) day that the tape might let go - but on the other hand, if you don't ever take your Midget passengers for any wild & hot summer night Drive-In "carpet rug burn" activities - then the sticky tape might get the job done...

I am also investigating a more modern replacement for the stiffener and/or original backing cardboard material that is now visually water stained and somewhat warped and/or cracked from old age....

I guess more data collection is required before I can make any progress this weekend...

I'll get back with more information as this project acquires more "substance"...

I used "Liquid nails"(for wood construction), comes in a caulking tube. Incredible tack, carpets stayed where I put them the first time, even resisted somewhat the usual hand pushing, pulling and smoothing that accompanies this job, with no mess, no fuss, no cleanup. Still holding well after 5 years. Of course I may well need a chisel if it ever comes time to remove the carpets, but hey...
