MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Identification please

Hi,

Need some help trying to work out what this thread is for. Any ideas?

There is another one on the other side. I can't work out what would need to be bolted in the wheel arch above the suspension mount.

Many thanks

James

I wondered about these on my car too. I thought perhaps it holds some some sort of cover on to leep crap out of the front bush?

Here's a better photo of the hole. It's not used for anything that I'm aware of. Maybe used for the factory jig (?) I'd like to know as well.

Jon Saylor

It wouldn't surprise me if those holes were used for the factory jigs, but they were definitely used in the early cars to attach the radius link brackets.

Here's the bulkhead of my AN5

Here is the same area cleaned up, with the bracket and suspension in place.

The ugly area to the right is peeling undercoat, not rot!

Bill, I also wondered if it was anything to do with that, but it appears that there is only the one hole on the later shells, not 3 as on the quarter eliptic sprung cars. But the position, - and the form with the raised pressing around the hole - does certainly matches the early cars for that one hole.

isnt that were the fuel pump bolts on or the fuel pipe tie down

Prop and the Blackhole Midget

Hi,

The main reason for asking is that as you can see in the photo I need to put some new metal in there. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything major.

Hi Prop - the fuel pump is located on the other side of the rear bulk head bracket if I am not mistaken.

No wonder there is rust issues around that hole if it is left open.

Has anyone got a new outer bulk head repair panel and can see if it has the holes?

Many thanks

Guy -

You're right, the fact that they kept one on the later shells supports the idea that it was used for the assembly fixture.

I don't suppose it matters if it's kept or not; the panel has enough contour that I'd lean toward buying a replacement and using it.

None of my later cars have had that panel replaced, so I don't know if replacements have the boss or not.
