MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Help ARK Racing Starting motor

Help needed. I am rebuilding a midget sprint car. It has an ARK Racing starter motor. The large terminal is present for the main lead but what connects to the spade terminal???? Any advice would be welcome. Cheers Howie

I'd expect a small lead from the main lead to go to the spade terminal. The main lead is to spin the motor and I'd expect a small lead to activate a solenoid that flicks out the gear to engage the ring gear. You can test this theory by applying current to just the spade and seeing if the gear flicks out or not.

Howard, possibly a white with red trace wire that would normally operate the separate solenoid by the battery, would be in use to activate the starter.

Like the attached crude picture

Bill

But if not like that we'd appreciate a picture as the particular starter you mention is outside my knowlege base!
Bill

you could always call the supplier

A rather odd site to navigate

Translation: shows me nothing except a vestgial pre-engaged starter motor in "faint" shadowed out so nothing can be seen

But which convinces me that the crude drawing wot I did will prolly be right-ish

Bill,

I looked at the site as well and it is certainly not impressive in its current state. Looks very much like work in progress and about at the beginning of the work as well.

Thanks Dan, tried a feed from main lead to spade, connected to battery in a vice, gear sprang and kicked in so that works off the car. Can it be left like that, just a loop feed from main terminal or does that feed need to be wired from somewhere else on the car. Tried contacting supplier but no joy so far. Should have taken more notice when I stripped the car! Howie

No wire as I have advised

power from ignition switch or separate starter switch

-----

white and red wire that would normally operate the solenoid is to be used from ignition switch

basic wiring to the small spade terminal

roughly as shown in my picture

No complicated linking wires
Bill

I thought Bill's graphic was impressive.

It amounts to the same thing in that you need both the starter and the spade terminal to get power only when the ign switch is thrown.

The starter needs power to flick the gear out and power to spin the motor.

On the edge pre-engaged starter and on the regular bendix, the single fat cable from the solenoid does it all. However the Edge pre-engaged achieves this by a very neat slave wiring to a spade. If your ark starter doesn't have provision for such neat arrangement then you'll need to run a thin wire all the way from the solenoid.
