MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Headlights

The main beam warning light on my 1972 1275 midget glows dimly when on dipped beam, stalk switch in center position. When the stalk switch is pushed foreward, main beam on, the warning light now glows brightly, have I got a problem or do all midgets do that ?

Thanks, Alan.

Very often this is as a result of the gauge illumination shining through the main beam indicator.

Try removing the gauge lamp from behind the speedo/tacho (not sure which one has the main beam lamp in it) and then see if it is illuminated when you have the dip beam on?

Or turn off the instrument lights.

Could it be caused by a high resistance in the earth return from the headlamps?

Or turn off the instrument lights. LOL
(I am now in red dwarf mode!!)
Kryton" Or we could use the teleporter!!"

Thanks for the replies.....Mines a 72, pre teleporter model so we can rule that out...Still the same with the panel lights off, the headlight earth checks o/k with a multimeter, no resistance.

Any further ideas gratefully received.

Try disconnecting the main beam (blue/white) at each headlamp loom in turn and see if it makes a difference.

Whatever the cause, it shouldn't do it. There is current leaking somewhere.

Thanks for the help, the problem was crossed wireing in the headlights...On main beam all was o/k, but on dipped beam both main & dipped lights were on..The car was professionally converted to halogen headlights 2 owners ago & has lots of mot certificates since, but the latest mot tester decided the lights were faulty.

Thanks again, Alan.

(Robert Midget Turbo. Re. 'Red Dwarf' - reminds me of my favourite line . . .

Lister: "Kryten, we're going to have to go to red alert!"

Kryten: "Are your sure, sir? It does mean we'll have to change the bulb.").
