MG Midget and Sprite Technical - hardtops

I have a 1966 midget with wind up windows and the flat rear deck around the hood area. I currently have a hardtop on it that is for the later car with the folding hood and it doesnt quite sit right around the top of the rear wings. What hardtops fitted these later cars, does anyone have a photo of where it goes over the rear wing beading so I can look for one that fits properly? The car did have an Ashley top when I bought it but I gave it away years ago and wish I hadn't

I am unsure about the correct period hard top, but when re-fitting my windscreen the angle that you fit the screen alters the fit of a hard top on the rear of the car.

Perhaps you could adjust the fit of the windscreen framing to get a better fit on the hard top?

Mike, your flat rear deck is actually curved, which makes the later hardtop fit even worse.

It will touch in the middle, but there will be gaps towards the outer edges. Then there is the issue of the wing beading and also the front end of the wing, above the top of the B-post.

Hi Dave, yes you have described the problem better than I did. I can bolt it all on and because it is a quite flimsy fibreglass top with wrap around perspex window it flexes a bit and will fit but there is a gap at the top of the wings that you can get your fingers under.

The hard tops for Mk2 midgets and later ones look similar, bur have a number of differences. The Mk2 hardtop has brackets which fit to the tear drop hood retainers and the sides are stepped whereas the later ones are flat. I have an old works hardtop for a Mk2 from which I have sold the fixings and glass. I will probably scrap the remains, but you are welcome to measure it as a pattern. Cheers, Dave
