MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Guess It's Time

I've rebuilt the engine, trans and front suspension on my '79 midget. Guess it's time to do the rear suspension. Was going to a new micro-brewery in the area on Sat. October 16 when we heard a big bang pulling away from a traffic light. The car kept moving so I knew it wasn't a half shaft. Found this view underneath upon reaching our destination. Drove home carefully and am now ordering parts. Happened one day short of the Oct. 17 anniversary of the car being completed at Abingdon in 1978.

Yes, I think it's just about due for a rebuild ;o)

You guys and your powerful 1500s with all those Jack Rabbit starts. ;-) I've never seen a spring that bad that was still holding the car up. Impressive that you could drive home on it.
Bill Young

Yep, those Big Block Midgets are torque monsters!

;)
Dave Rhine ('78 1500)

I think with some mechanic's wire you can get another few years from those springs. ;)
Trevor Jessie

a squirt of WD40, a new condenser and that will be as good as new...

NOT

As Bill said, you were lucky to get home with that one
Bill 1

Wow!

Is that three broken leaves? Makes me wonder if a couple of them had already broken before the third let go at that stoplight.

Glad you got it home safely,

-:G:-
Gryf Ketcherside

Two of the leaves broke and a third looks stressed. I'm guessing it was the top leaf that went bang - there's about an inch and a half section of it completely gone. On the remaining back half of the top leaf about half of the break is clean and half is corroded which indicates to me that's where it started. The third leaf down may have cracked when the big bang occurred. Could have also happened on the trip home. Who knows. I hadn't spotted any problems or breaks before this happened. May be able to tell more when I get the spring out of the car.

Prop

Geez Prop. You like to live dangerously. My wife now wants your address complete with coordinates. Imagine my surprise. I didn't even know she had access to Hellfire missiles...

Kim Tonry

Opps!

Sooo ... Kim is NOT your wifes name, But rather yours. And she was sitting in the passangers seat. YIKES, I bet SHE IS a bit "disturbed" Im hoping your dog house has a thick blanket, ill light a candle in your honor and pray for you tonight... its amazing how stray bullets can recoshay and hit innocent by-standers...LOL

I have to admit truthfully, I was thinking at the time when I was pecking out that message that I might have been pushing that line just a little to dangerously with that type of comment, No offense was intended, I was looking for just a cheap laugh, Now in hind sight and realizing your beuaty queen was the passanger,,, I REALLY wish I could take that comment back from public record, Please offer my humblist apologies to your dearest girl,,, I really was out of line.

As she is riding in a midget, then im certian she must be a vary attractive (thin) and young looking woman.

I wonder if this type of comment is the reason Im still single... MMMmmm Naaaahhh.

Absolutely no offense taken. But just to be safe, I wouldn't sleep at home for the next few nights if I were you. ;-)
Kim Tonry

Thanks for accepting my apology

Gryf - Got the broken spring out this morning and you were right. It's three broken leaves. The second leave from the bottom has 4 or 5 inches completely broken off on the end that isn't shackled.
