MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Grille Repair?
| Can anyone suggest how I might repair my Sprite's grille?
Over time it has lost most of the verticals on the top row (most were missing when I got the car, so not all my fault). I can't even tell what metal it's made from, is it aluminium or stainless steel? The photo was taken last year and recently I had a go at aralditing thin strips of aluminium on the back. They held for a while until I tried tweaking the top edge to straighten it a bit. That just resulted in a tinkling as some of them fell off. As an aside, in a pre-MoT check, the horn which worked the day before had stopped working. The fuse was blown. A tinkling grille tooth must have landed across the horn contacts and shorted it out. I know the obvious answer is to replace the whole grille but at £375 a new one is out of the question for now. I know that some people replace with a simple mesh panel but I prefer the original shiny style. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Colin ![]() |

| Colin. I have got a pretty good centre section of the same grille as yours, because I fitted a mesh section. I won’t be using it so you can gladly have it for free. Where in Shropshire are you? One of our club members lives in Bettisfield and I will be seeing him on Saturday at the Tatton Park show, so if I give it to him, you could possibly collect it from him after this weekend (6th/7th June) Bernie. |

| Colin. I’ve just noticed that yours is the earlier type whereas mine is the later one with the chrome insert in the middle, but it will fit if you want it. Bernie. |

| Bernie. Thank you for your very kind offer. I THINK I have found one but am awaiting confirmation. If that falls through I will get back to you. I suspect I know your contact as I, too, know a Spridget enthusiast who lives in Bettisfield and goes to the Shropshire meets at Tern Hill. Cheers Colin |

| Yes, that will be Rob Thompson. He is a member of the N.West area and recently started the Shropshire group. Bernie. |

| Bernie. It is, indeed Rob but the Shropshire Group has been lurking in the backfround for several years.
I thought it might be Rob in this dashcam photo that I posted back at the end of 2020. I knew he lived in Shropshire and had wanted to make contact. It proved to be Alastair Wood who had recently moved from Kent to Shropshire about to introduce his midget to its new home. Alastair and I subsequently met Rob at a Revs meeting and started an informal Shropshire Group which met monthly. It tailed off a bit and Rob was instrumental in getting things moving again. A slightly bigger but still largely informal group now billing itself as the Shropshire MASC (NW Outpost) meets on the last Wednesday through the summer months at Ternhill. Colin ![]() |
