MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Grease caps - wire wheels

After more than 20 years of ownership of the same car I've purchased something the car's never had in all that time - the grease caps unique to the wire wheel cars.

And, I've a question about them. How is the threaded stud section (of maybe UNC thread) is used to remove the grease cap?

Also, any reason why I can't simply cut them off and weld in a hook type fitting instead - like maybe the eyelet from a clutch slave?

Thanks

take a bolt of the same thread, and a fat nut. Screw the nut on halfway and use this to screw onto, and extract, the grease cap. Or use long-nosed pliers like the rest of us ;-)

Daniel

Get/Make yourself a slide hammer then drill and tap some round bar up the centre with the same thread as the grease caps lock these adaptors onto the threads with a nut then put the same size adaptor bolt into your slide hammer screw it into your round bar then using the slide hammer action you can remove the grease caps in seconds.

Check your thread size. The black cap is an original off my 69 B. The siver one is a replacement. Different length and thread. The bolt I used for my tool was from some left over B air filters. I'm sure the nut came from one of the several B's that I parted out but I don't remember exactly where.

Led. The balsck cap's thread is 5/16" UNF (ANF) and the Silver cap is 8mm std metric.

Daniel, as mentioned above, the thread is simply for removal. I guess if you fit a small hook to assist removal, it would be easier.

Daniel,

LaVerne's tool is almost like mine I used a tube nut
which is a long nut used to connect threaded rod. I then connected a one foot piece of threaded rod to it and I had some 2" round stock about 2" long drilled a hole in it a little bigger that the rod, slid it or the
rod and put 2 regular nuts on the end and tightened them together and this made a nice little slide hammer
that takes the cap right off.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm pretty much settled on removing the section of stud and welding in much shortened clutch pushrods. I will then be able to hook something into them and yank them out.

The reason for this will be clearer when other parts of this mini-project have been completed!

Daniel -

I use a small slide hammer with one of the adaptors that came with it. It works perfectly and does no damage to the cap. The adaptor is just a long, double ended nut with one end threaded to suit the slide hammer (3/8" UNC in my case), the other end to suit the stud on the cap (5/16" UNF?).

If your new caps are metric, a new adaptor is easy enough to make. It really isn't worth warming up the welder to modify the caps....
