MG Midget and Sprite Technical - getting into reverse

I am having difficulty getting my 76 midget into reverse. It shifts into the other 4 gears ok. It seems as if the shift lever dosn't move downward to get it into reverse. Any ideas what might be the problem? thanks for any ideas.

I do not know anything about Midget gearboxes, but on the MGA you have gear selection problems if you fit the cover plate incorrectly.

I dont know much about 1500, but I think you have to pull up on the stick shift knob...before or as your shifting into reverse....I think it takes a little musle also.

Well -- I,m still trying to figure out who was in my garage and changed my tranny so that you have to pull up on the lever. This is proof that I,m getting old--When I read the comment from the two of you I had to hit myself on the forehead. I hate to admit it but I have owned this car for five years. Thanks

you're just not driving it often enough !

Agreed, you pull up on the gearstick and head for where 5th would be, if you had a 5-speed.

;-)

I agree, it doesn't exactly jump out at you. When I first drove my Midget off the lot back in '95, I found reverse only after hunting around a bit. The PO had fitted a nice walnut shift knob, which looked great - and still does - but it bore the immortal octagon instead of a shift pattern.

Cheers,
