MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Gearbox whine

I'm new to midgets & am looking to buy one, & I seek some gearbox advice. I know they whine a bit in first but I'm going to view one also whines a little in second. The gearbox in it was rebuilt about 3K ago. Is it OK & normal to whine in second?
Thanks

Hi Derek and welcome to our community

The gearbox in a Spridget tends to be noisey. First gear particularly as this is a straight cut gear. Second gear can be noisey without being a big problem but I would advise you to look and test a number of car before you make a choice. Then you will be able to compare one gearbox with another.
Good luck in finding a great car and believe me the more you inspect the better will be the final choice.

hello Derek
Yes. the gearbox is noisey compared to anything new. My ribcase box has new internals and the straight cut first gives a very characteristic sound that is nothing to worry about. Changing into second brings welcomed relief! Good luck with the search. Beleive me, when you find a good one you will not want to stop driving it!
