MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Gearbox stuck in second gear

It's a 1275 rib case box, which has been rebuilt. It is now stuck in second gear. Before I tear it all apart again, is there a tweak for this?
Dominic Clancy

That sucks Dom

Will it shift without the engine running ....moving the gear shifter back and forth without the clutch....

If you can, its probably the in the clutch system, and not the tranny

Hi,

What a bummer, you must be gutted.

Was it rebuilt professionally? It so just send it back to them.

For it to be jammed in a gear, sounds like there's a fault in the 1st/2nd synchro hub or the selector detent.

Good luck with it all.

Haven't got to the point of running the engine yet (see thread on engine mountings) and the gbx rebuilder is yours truly.....

Still flummoxed though. I have done a lot of MGA gbx rebuilds and although the midget box is a bit smaller the basics are identical.

The selector moves from side to side through the forks, but the rod is firmly stuck in second gear.

Dominic Clancy

Stuck in second is a new one on me.

Did you dismantle the 1st/2nd speed hub assembly when you rebuilt it?
Dave O'Neill2

It could be at step 13b, in the manual, it says to sacrifice a virgin goat, ....perhaps the goat wasnt so pure

I stay out of gearboxes, its all voodoo black arts

Yes, it was treated to new springs and detente balls, worked a treat and shifted between all gears just fine on the bench.

"The selector moves from side to side through the forks, but the rod is firmly stuck in second gear. "

Are you saying that you are able to move the selector from side to side in the selector rods even with second gear being engaged?
Dave O'Neill2

Yeah, if it is in second gear the gates should not be lined up to allow you to move from side to side.

Do I remember correctly that if a synchronizer ring get stuck to the cone it will act like it is in gear even when it isn't until it is unstuck? If so, maybe it only feels like it is stuck in 2nd, but if more power were put to it, it would break free.
