MG Midget and Sprite Technical - gearbox identity

MG midget 1500 1975

Just read an article in classic car weekly which stated "Reverse can be tricky to find even on a car in good condition (lift the lever, pull to the right and push back)
Now unless I'm very unlucky reverse for mine is right and forward. Is that correct or have classic car weekly got it wrong. Oh and my Midget isn't on the road yet so haven't driven it more than a few yards.

I don't know where reverse is on a 1500 but I do know jurnos make many mistakes even in the shortest of articles or even just a few words of photo caption

what's the jurnos name, one was supposed to be writing about Sporting Bears Dream Rides when I took him out in my car but he was more interested in Midgets - he'd got a Mk1 MR2
Nigel Atkins

Jurno is Mike Le Caplain.
J White

1500s are right and forwards.

Earlier models are right and back.

Thanks. Looks like he got it wrong. I was starting to wonder if I'd got a weird gearbox :-D
J White

that might be the name, I've lost his card

does he mention anything about (?)

owner's/Driver's Handbooks

test driving as many good examples of the model as you can

regular servicing and driving
Nigel Atkins

Nope he doesn't mention any of that. It's just basic info and what to look for.
J White

uhmmm, that might confirm it's him as jurnos never put what you say :)

I'll have to find the card

classic cars have been about longer than the magazines about them yet even the most common ones like Spridgets and Bs for which information is almost endless have articles about them full of mistakes

jurnos are not ones for detail or accuratcy
Nigel Atkins

Sounds like a transverse A like mini, MG1300. I have the gearknob from a ADO16 in my midget which says "lift" in the little bar on the right.
Alex G Matla

My 1977 Midget is right, lift and forward.
Just out of interest, does anyone else find that their car prefers to go into reverse instead of 3rd-4th? Or is it just me?
