MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fuel Tank Refitting Midget - 1275 MKIII

When I removed the fuel tank, more than a year ago, I could clearly see the washers and packing on the bolts were not original. I have looked in all the normal places, workshop manual, contemporary parts catalogues etc. and I can find very little information. The parts caltalogue shows two rubber strips, marked long and short without any size or location details. I also found reference on Ebay to a fitting kit that seemed to comprise a mixture of washers. Judging by the amount of packing / washers that I removed it seems the space between the tank and the boot floor is important. I guess I could work it out by trial and error but lying on the floor and removing the tank several times, does not appeal, as I am not as young or supple as I used to be! Any thoughts and advice would be most welcome. Thanks,
Ray

AIUI the strips were simply to keep the top of the tank away from the bottom of the boot floor in order to create air movement between the two surfaces to prevent damp...and rust..
Someone will come along with a better idea no doubt..Dave

Hi Ray,
Not sure how much difference there is between the MKIII and the MK II, but on mine the two long strips fit on the side mounts. That’s the shorter length of the tank and the single mounts fit on the remaining ones.

Use a jack to lift the tank and hold it in place whilst you tighten the bolts. Should be a washer and locking washer for each bolt.

Got some photos on my blog which might help

As above Ray.
Think it's just the two rubber strips which separate the tank from the floor IIRC.

Thanks for all the responses and suggestions. James, your blog proved that one picture is worth many words. The parts catalogue I referred to, stated 2 long strips and 2 short ones. Looking at other online catalogues, I see different suggestions. However, I now understand.the result to aim for as I need to take account of copious rust proofing by the previous owner in the mid 1990s that has performed brilliantly.
