MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fuel Pump Cover Crankcase Breather
This is on Ebay (see photo). The seller says: Adapter for mounting a breather to your MG midget, Austin Healey Sprite, Mini, Morris or other car with A series engine. Mounts in place of the blanking plate for the mechanical fuel pump. This will help oil leaks especially if your rings are worn causing excess crankcase pressure. Machined from tough 6160 aluminum with cap screws and heavy duty steel washers. Use Loctite on the threads. The center hole is tapped for a 3/8" NPT fitting. You can use an A/N fitting or the fitting of your choice to route tubing to a catch can or other device. I say: Can someone explain the catch tank concept as I've never seen one installed. ![]()

its a tank with a hose that catches excess oil... http://motors.shop.ebay.com/items/oil-catch-tank_W0QQ_nkwZoilQ20catchQ20tank prop

Well Prop that much I do know. My question is... Where dose the tank go and why is there blow by to this tank? Why could you not just connect a hose from the addapter and let breath out to the atmosphere - why to the tank? Would you keep the timing cover to carb set-up when using this tank? Do you empty the tank? I've just never seen one installed and not clear on how they work.

The Mini Mania breather is more complex than this and incorporates a baffled design so the engine doesn't just pump oil out of the breather. The catch tank is there to catch the oil vapour rather than have it deposited on the road or in motorsports on the race track. A good design of tank has a drain tap on it.

A side-benefit is that you can see what's happening. If, say, a cupful of oil appears in the catch tank every few hundred miles you've got a problem to chase down and fix. If it stays dry or just gets a few drops every thousand miles then you know you've got a good'un and can stop worrying. I used to religiously open up and inspect the tank before and after every race - now I just glance at it once per weekend. I've not had to empty it or clean it in 3 years of racing.
