MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fuel filler pipe outside diameter

After a bit of help if possible, I need to know what the outside diameter of the metal fuel filler pipe if possible the diameter of the pipe and the diameter of the bead.

Many thanks
Martyn Wilks

Why do you want to know this?
Daniel Stapleton

MK2 midget 2 1/4 " OD can't get to the bead as it is fitted I am afraid

Daniel I am interested in the size of the pipe (MG Midget becoming a Lenham) as I am in the process of making an adaptor for an Enots Monza filler cap as I'm not keen on what's available.

I don't have an old one to measure and I was interested in knowing what the OE diameter was to fit the body grommet as it has two inside diameters.

The aluminium adaptor I'm making has to fit through so I was wondering if it was a tight fit on the smaller ID or the slightly bigger one
Martyn Wilks

Oh...im sorry i miss understood

give me a moment and ill measure mine up for you

Hi, It's 2.25 inches OD if I am understanding the question
Mike Fairclough

Cheers all, and this is what it looks like after a couple of hours machining this morning - from a solid bar of aluminium.

Just the matter of getting the grommet grove in the much thicker fibreglass of my body.

Martyn Wilks

It looks very neat. On my car I wanted to retain a locking petrol cap so purchased an aluminium baynonet fitting top piece and had that welded to a purpose made aluminium pipe. I suppose you've used a classic motorcycle monza cap?
Daniel Stapleton

Yes it is a classic Monza cap but it is the genuine Norgren item which I picked up off eBay last week for £5.00 - and its new.

I'm not yet sure how I will fit the grommet to the fiberglass body yet as it is probably 5 times thicker than the steel equivalent, I may make a tool that I can remove some of the thickness from inside but won't know until I cut the hole on Saturday.
Martyn Wilks

it should fit Martyn, having recently dismantled my rotten Lenham (prior to reshelling) I noted it had an original pipe and grommet through the rear body.
David Smith

Yeah, I would think you could get it in, speaking for my car, the grommet isn't exactly super tight on the shell.

Nice looking filler, but please stop talking about Lenhams. I want but can't have one :-(

here's a challenge for you Malc:

David Smith

Yes 2.25 od inches is what i got

Sorry Malcolm but you might see it in Gloucestershire next year, all my family live there except me although I was born in the Forest of Dean.

David: That was going through at there last auction as well, I have given it some thought as I would really like a 1960 or earlier ID (no MOT plus a decent plate)

If it were a grand I would buy it as it has a V5.

Out of interest how thick was the section where the filler neck grommet sits was it on your old shell - mine feels about 5mm thick and I have doubts that I will get the grommet to seal on that thickness
