MG Midget and Sprite Technical - fuel filler bling

OK so I got bored and decided the rubber grommet surrounding the fuel filler neck was leaky, fuggly and contributed to rust. Solution- custom alloy mountings as per the pics (next post also) the whole thing bolts up with stainless cap screws and 2 neoprene sealing washers. The whole ensemble is topped off with an MG logoed stainless locking cap. Hopefully no more rust and looks better. Cheers Lads

Nice, that would be a good idea to strengthen around my filler hole in my fibreglass rear end ;-0.

Theres a crack appeared there that i'm afraid will propogate.. and it'll look cool too..

i'll blatantly rip off you're idea if you dont mind !

Very nice.... I like it,

You should contact moss and sell them an order of a few hundred...id imagine you can use that on several models of differant cars

How much are you selling them for....? :-)

Hi guys
only a one off I'm afraid took me 3 hours of mainly lathe work and had to make a small spot facing tool to do the recessed screw holes.
Feel free to copy it.
The basic steps are:
1 Cut the two alloy discs out of say 6 to 8mm with a jig saw. 8 mm is better for the external disc as you need some thickness to cut the recess for the filler neck flange.
2 Drill a large hole in the centre of each disc to take a big bolt and nut (I used 16mm), make the bolt a tight fit as this is how you hold it in the lathe chuck.
3 turn the chamfer and start the cut (don't go more than 4mm) for the filler neck from this side
4 Remove from chuck, reverse the bolt, put back in to the chuck and turn the recess for the flange about 1.2mm deep
5 finish cutting the filler opening using a sharp boring bar and very fine cuts till it breaks through, exercise great care at this stage as the ring will detach
6 Repeat operation for rear lock ring
7 Clamp both pieces together and Measure and drill 6 holes then spot face recesses for whatever screws your using allowing for tapping threads into the lock ring.
8 Finish/deburr polish and cut two neoprene or similar sealing washers for each side of the body between the discs
9 Take photos and post because you've been really clever LOL

Rods looks more period, and i'm greatly in favour of making your own things, but if you have no time and lots of spare cash....

lots of different types..

HAhaha.... now thats just rich, true british evil, :-) :-) :-)

Hmmm....so lets see,

Id need to find a metal lath, get the tools to do the various cuttings, buy or lease a nice big heated / cooled shop, with 220 electric to house the lath, attend night tech school for 2 years to learn how to opperate the lath proficiantly, then get 2 extra part time jobs working evenings and weekends to pay for this adventure, soooo in what 10, 12 years is all it would takd to, how did you say that...

""Feel free to copy it""

Yeah, sure sign me up.... hahaha

Still... I have to say, that photo shows the quality of craftsman you are, and why those commenting hold you in high esteem

Well done

er, wouldn't you also need some filler washers/grommets if the mounting discs are flat as where the filler neck goes on the panel it is curved, or am I missing something?

Its called bubble gum...haha

Thanks Prop
I did it all with a cheap asian lathe (under a grand) so it's not so much of a stretch after all. Yep the workshop is air conditioned due to necessity, not so hi falutin really just wacked in an old box unit I had laying around. Airport Transfers Tonbridge seemed like the obvious solution
Nigel go to step 8 in my last post
Cheers all
PS Andy yes these caps are beautiful but mine is "unique" literally the only one on the planet.

Nice work Mr. Bowers! I have yet to enter the world of lathes (though I learned to wood turn when a kid) but have this feeling that if I did get myself tooled up I would end up spending loads of cash making all sorts of things. Mind you, with some of the ideas I've had for my midget it would have been handy.
Nick Nakorn

X2 nick

I had metal shop several decades ago in high school.and got to spend time with a metal lath...it was great, and I can only dream what it would be like to have both a lath and a milling machine.

But yeah... I have to get that 1st million in cash in the bank, in order to make all the things ive thought about

Side note ... I still have and use my BBQ set I made using the high school lathe, I must have done something right

Whats really funny, a school teacher last summer saw my BBQ set and laughed and said that my bbq set today would get me banned and permentaly suspended from school and probably jailed for making that set now a days in schoool...wow hahaha

Rod,
yeap I saw point 8 but it didn't say the washers would be thick to allow for the curvature of the panel

I can appreciate the skill, quality and finish of your work and I'm not knocking what you've done as you know I wouldn't have the first clue where to start or the skills to do even a half decent job

as you also know I have a simple mind so was just simply wondering how sandwiching a curved bit of metal between two straight bits of metal would work out without thick spacers but to be honest I've not studied the panel just remember it as being curved from when I open the boot and when fuelling, perhaps it isn't as curved as I think
Nigel Atkins

Hi Nigel
You are correct the washer needs to be fairly thick to accommodate the curve. I have trial fitted with 4mm self adhesive tape product and this works well. However I suspect it's not fuel proof and I will have to source some that is. I'll post pictures of the fitted unit as soon as the car comes back from painting.
Cheers All
PS yes I have a BBQ set also Prop
PPS What ideas Nick???
