MG Midget and Sprite Technical - finished ribcase gearbox rebuild at last but.....

HI,

After far too long I've finally finished rebuilding a ribcase gearbox for my 1275 midget.

All seems ok, I can select all 4 forward gears and reverse and on turning the input shaft I get what I think is the desired movement at the output shaft.

The only issue seems to be neutral. When in neutral if I turn the input shaft the out put still turns but if I had it it will stop (this is turning the shaft anti-clockwise when facing the bell housing. if I turn the shaft the other way the output still turns and requires considerably more effort to stop it rotating.

The gearbox is sitting on a bench with no oil in it. Could it juts need running in or am I being overly optimistic!

Thanks

Bob

Did you use any oil when assembling?

It helps to oil the bearing and synchro rings.

You will always get some drag from the synchros when in neutral. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the reassurance Dave. I did use oil but it was around 2 years ago I put the internals together. It ended up getting put to one side and I've only just fitted the rear housing and gear leaver remote.
