MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Engine out oil out ?

Hi I am taking the engine out of my 1275 as the clutch is making nasty noises intermittently and I think the fork bush has gone. I want to get the engine in and out as quickly as possible and am following an old post where they did it in 31 minutes- I am no where near that !
Do I need to drain the oil please.I am not taking the gearbox out. Thanks

Nope, no need to drain the oil.

Thanks for that

took me two and a half days Mark, mind you most of the time was spent cleaning muck off everything, I also scraped what seemed like a gardens worth of soil from inside the bellhousing, no idea how that may have got in there? also those radiator shroud bolts were a pig to get out for probably the first time in their life, just out of interest how long did it take you?

It was 31 minutes to take the running engine out, but it is the race midget and the front lifts off and out of the way with 4 bonnet pins and one electrical connector.

It took 57 minutes to get it back in and running again from being on the deck. All the nuts and bolts are clean and unseized and we know what components to leave attached to various leads and pipes.

And we had done it six times in that day trying to find the sound of some "machining" occurring in and around the flywheel... it was the starter motor dog gear just catching on the flywheel and we solved it with two flat washer mounted on the outer edge of the belhousing and in effect didn't need to take the engine out at all to cure it.

I've got the engine to take out of my road Midget for the same reason as you and tbh I'm not looking forward at all as it will be a right pain in the backside!

And how long did it keep running after it was out Andrew?

just wanted to mention, when I took my clutch out I may have damaged the small plastic bush that sits in the block and supports the first motion shaft, possibly by lifting the engine at the wrong angle when I took it out, because it was a Sunday and all the shops were closed and the hired crane had to be back on Monday I had to put it back in and fingers crossed it will be ok, but I wish I'd purchased a bush (only a couple of pounds).

Dave, I assume you're talking about the spigot bush.

Just to avoid confusion, it's not plastic. It's either an oilite or a roller, and it sits in the end of the crankshaft. :)

Hi Dave,
It took me 3.5 hours to get the engine out but it was relatively clean because i took it out at christmas and changed and cleaned all the old bolts. The clutch problem was a completely frazzled release bearing .I am hoping to put it back tomorrow :-)

3.5 hours is not bad by any measure

Personally.. i like to take my time on this stuff... If i get to ahead then im overlooking something... And whola, there toes $100 right out of my wallet

Slow steady safe with lots of breaks is my motto...

7 months and counting to do my cly head..but hey no mistakes as of yet...hahaha

Hi Prop
Engine back in now and clutch seems to be OK. Took it for a blast in a rare afternoon of british sunshine.Managed to drift the rear end much to my partners consternation :-)
Hopefully just going to drive it now for the summer

The engine in the race car has to come out again this weekend as I think the release bearing has collapsed again yesterday whilst at Mallory at the MotorsTV race event.

Big smile on my face though as I got a Class win and 3rd place overall. :-)
