MG Midget and Sprite Technical - dual gauge
Hello, the following concerning dashboard removing, but not the end of the story...... Well, I have removed the steering wheel (without bloody nose), all the instruments from the dash, and reconnect each instrument on each yarn. I now have to remove the dual gauge. The temp gauge is screewed to the head, and I am asking if it is better to fill the water from the cooler, or let it go away from the head? I suppose there is not a lot of water in the head, and as the head is under the hose which goes to the radiator. Not sure, if I fill the water from the radiator, the water in the head will go away though the radiator. Any advice? Concerning the oil pipe, as I never removed it, is there some oil wich can go on the new carpets, when I am going to unscreew it? thanks laurent

The temperature sensor has to be removed from the cylinder head. I use a plastic pipe to syphon out some of the coolant from the radiator filler cap. The sensor bulb (and tube connecting to the gauge) is full of ether so be careful when removing through the bulkhead. When I took my dual gauge out I did get some oil come out of the connection on the back of the gauge. Have a cloth handy in case you do. There should be a small leather (?) washer to seal the pipe to the gauge. I had to make another one as I think I lost the original. Steve

many thanks, especialy for the oil washer. I certainly would have it lost, if i didn't know it. laurent

If you remove the temp bulb from the head, and leave the cap on the rad, then it's easy to block the hole and stop water flowing; even a rag will do this. I use a fibre washer on the oil pipe to gauge joint; then the nit only needs to be hand tight. We use to have Autoparts in Malvern that had fibre washers, grommets, fasteners of all kinds, split pins ... and so on in those nice Mafco boxes. Now we have a Halfords (instead), getting hold of such things is must harder... A

"then the nit only needs to be hand tight" an Arthur Bostrom moment Anthony? priceless... sorry just had to :-)

Hi Bill It's not always clear whether my bad trypage is down to a propensity for my fingers to ramdomly find keys or just the usual brain-leakage. I meant to write "The nut only needs to be hand tught" A

Believe me Anthony I suffer as much if not more but an "AB" moment in a thread from Laurent in France? Really priceless! Now who "tught" me that ;-)

Be aware that the hex is on a separate piece from the actual sensor and care should be exercised to prevent the central part from rotating too much and crimping the tube. David "sadder but wiser" Lieb
