MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Door differences -- wind up window versions.

Does anyone know the precise difference between the doors on the early wind up window versions, and the later ones?

I know the difference is internal. There's a difference between the early window winder mechanism and the later version.

But are they interchangable.

In particular, can you fit an early window mechanism, to a late door?

What are you meaning by early and late. Rough change date?
I don't recall any difference in the door casings between my 1971 and my 1978 cars.

Early wind up doors have holes for the exterior trimm.
Never noticed any other differences.

Only US 1500's had some kind of side impact protection bar

Yes they are, I have fitted the earlier type winder mechanism to a later type door.
I will post some pictures tomorrow of the two types of inner door profiles if this helps.

Window regulators are interchangeable.

Early doors had slightly different door catches - the bit attached to the back of the door with three screws. The holes are in a different position - well, one of them, at least.

Also, the internal door pull mountings were different. Early doors had captive nuts, whereas later doors had square holes, into which a plastic plug was inserted, but they were further apart.

Can't think of anything else, offhand.

Thanks for those replies.

According to Moss and my old Sprite parts manual from the Sprite and midget Centre that used to be in Richmond, the early doors circa 65/6, are different to the late circa 70 onwards. And 2 different part numbers are given for the window mechanisms.

But if the differences are only the items described below by everybody, then I'm happy.

I've got a bare '73 door with no rust, and want to put the guts from my '66 Sprite into it, -- rather than weld a new bottom onto my Sprite door, which below the waist, consists mostly of rust and filler.
