MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Distributor cap carbon brush.

Who knows where you can buy the carbons for distributor caps these days?

I've just lost one. :(

Instant update, Moss, Leacy etc sell 'em. I posted too soon.
Lawrence Slater

if I had an old cap (fine for use in your terms) I'd post it to you but sorry I haven't
Nigel Atkins

Lawrence, true to form! Congratulations. Many would just buy a complete new dizzy cap. I admire your frugality!
Now, did you buy a spare?
Guy W

Thanks Nigel, I only need the carbon.

Yup I'm getting a spare Guy, I've got two Sprigets to feed these days. lol.
Lawrence Slater

Lawrence, You passed that test too - buying a spare is the correct answer because it saves on postage.

When I lost the dizzy carbon once, I made a replacement by filing down a carbon brush from a long-dead electric drill, which for some reason I hadn't chucked out.
Guy W

How much are they?

I bought a cap recently and the brush was missing.
Dave O'Neill2

About £2.50/75 plus delivery, and as Guy said, get a spare at the same time. --- I didn't realise I was being tested then, ha ha. :)

That's a good idea Guy, I might have a brush set or two lying around somewhere too. Did it last?
Lawrence Slater

Yes it did last, although perhaps that is testing fate. Its in the car, and it must be around 4 years now.
Guy W

Excellent, that'll save me a few quid then. :)
Lawrence Slater

sorry Lawrence I only meant I'd post the carbon (for 2nd class normal letter)

I would of course resist the temptation to file the carbon right down and stretch the spring - because I have strong will power :)
Nigel Atkins

Ooooh, Leacy's £2.10

I'll pick one up next time I'm passing.
Dave O'Neill2

Or 2 quid including free post, for the same thing on ebay.

Now that's a result.

My ebay brush arrived today.

It seems very long. Photo below shows it next to a brush from another new cap.

Dave O'Neill2

I bought some from Ebay too Dave. They look the same as Leacy's in the photos.

I guess you just cut them down if they won't all go in.

I'm gonna try later today, and fire up my new midget. The suns supposed to be coming out, and I also want to shove the MGF seats in for a preview.
Lawrence Slater

I gave one a try today. It seems to be a bit too thick to fit in the hole. I'll try again tomorrow.
Lawrence Slater

Mine fits in the hole OK, it's just the length that is an issue.

Mine is for a 43/45D dissy.
Dave O'Neill2

They are very easy to sand or file down to fit
